Giving a talk at a local college

Some time ago my Tri-Ess chapter was asked to come to University of North Texas and give a talk to a class about Trangerism. Well three of us agreed to go and give the talk. We have done this in the past with UNT and have also conducted seminars with local PD's in the area. Those are fun because the look on some of the rookie PD officers faces. LOL So like most of us, I had to decided what to wear. My wife said to look at what the weather is suppose to be for that day. Then the local TV started talking about ANOTHER SNOW storm heading for Dallas, TX. Now it looks like we may get the snow tomorrow which is the day we are scheduled to talk to the class at UNT. So now have to wait and see if UNT is closed tomorrow or not. LOL A one inch snow can close down Dallas, TX. Just in case, I have selected a long wool skirt, long sleeve sweater top and my 3" black ankle boots. If the snow storm is like the one we had a few weeks ago, I'm not going anywhere. LOL We here in Dallas, TX got 12-14" of snow. BTW they are saying now that depending on how much we get tomorrow, we could very well set a new record for the most snow in one winter. The last storm set a new record for the deepest snow.

Hi Joanne. I find I still really enjoy teaching, especially since I do not have to make tests and read and grade all the research papers!!

I do hope you will enjoy the teaching experience as much as I do.

Hope your weather holds. The weather guys don't think we will see much more than clouds and cool weather in central OK, but looks like the storm system will drop south.

Last Wednesday, I taught three sections (1 1/2 hrs each) of a friends classes with my lesson plan called Gender Variation and Sexual Orientation, with suitable changes reflecting new and projected changes in research and diagnosis. Took from 11 AM to 5 PM to get through all the classes. I have taught these OU courses at least a day each semester for the last three years. His course is popular and two sections (50 each) are students from a variety of majors including premed, psychology and sociology, and one section is for the women's studies department. The presentations are nicely received, and I have maintained a degree of contact with several of the students over the years at their request. Nice young people.

Then, on March 4, I will be teaching a 2.5 hour seminar to graduate and advanced undergraduate students at Oklahoma City University. I have made presentations to one of the seminars each semester including the summer semester for the last 4 years. It is supposed to be filmed and commited to a DVD for sharing with another teacher at another university. Guess I need to get my hair trimmed and colored and my nails done before then, huh.

Will the DVD be available to purchase? I know someone "on the inside" (you) who could possibly get me a copy at cost?!

I would seriously like to get a copy if I can.

Well, see, I learned something new from you! I have never heard of giving a presentation to kids in the police training program. I am going to look into that for our group! Thanks!

Hi Virginia. I am promised a copy, so will see if I can "boost" another for you.

Or we could maybe make a copy. It will be done by the university, but is not planned as a for sale item, and I have to admit that I would be a bit upset if it were, since that is not the point. It is likely to be edited a tiny tad, to fit within a different class length.

Has your snow gone yet?

Unfortunately we still have snow on the ground, probably upto 4 -5 inches in places, but where the sun has the right angle it is melted. What is strange is the birds seem to have left the area. The four feeders we have are still full. We had a cardinal on the porch this morning but other than that is is like birdless on the mountain! Maybe there is a hawk in the area.

They are calling for an 1" or so of snow Wednesday and into Thursday.

Update on Seminar..... Well it went off great. There were 42 in the class. The other two girls that went did most of the presentation. I did a couple of life stories and then all three of us did a question/answer session. BTW, the low pressure system went south and we got ZIP for snow this morning. still cold, 36 degree. LOL I need to wear my high heels more. Boy do my feet hurt right now. LOL The prof asked us to give another seminar next month, so she was very pleased with out presentation. We had 12-14 students that had never meet a TG person before and asked a lot of questions after the seminar was over and yes we were asked the standard questions too. Funny how those questions always come up. LOL This one girl was totally shocked that I was married and my wife was OK with it. Guess she lived a sheltered life. LOL

As for talking to the Police Departments, they requested it, to allow theeir officers to see that there IS a TG side that are NOT Sex Workers. Again most PD officers seem to be surprised that we even exist. With both Dallas and Ft. Worth making Gender Expression a protected status, more PD are asking us to talk to their officers, so that they will be exposed to us and learn how to act/react when they come face-to-face with us for any reason.
Many PD's are now staffing a Diversity Officer because of the new laws.

I'm glad you put up this subject, because I am in the process of setting up a meeting with a few of the girls from my group with 2 professors from the college here to hold a dialog or seminar with their students. The professors teach a course in Human Sexuality and are interested in talking to us so we can set up an agenda of what to present to the students.
I am interested in what your presentation contained, so that we might copy it for our presentation also. I have materials from Tre-Ess in the form of pamphlets explaining about Tri-Ess and Crossdressers to hand out to the students if they are interested in learning more about us.
Our meeting is set for next month on the 17th so if you can send me anything that will be of help to us it would be appreciated.
