Happy to hear you had fun with it, CJ. That's how it should be, when speaking to colleagues who are receptive to the message.
I was needing an explanation of this:
Cisgender: Identifying with or experiencing a gender the same as one's biological sex, e.g. being both male-gendered & male-sexed.
The short explanation of the article makes it sound as though she's saying that just by existing, cisgendered people contribute to transphobia. I'm oversimplifying this, right? What is she saying?

Tributary: 1) a ruler of state that pays tribute to a conquerer 2) a stream feeding into a larger stream or a lake.A personal article written by a lesbian feminist on how cisgenderism is a tributary of transphobia

Hi all,
Thanks for the support and feedback. Always appreciated.
Anita,
I included the article in order to show my colleagues what some of the cutting edge thinking looks like on matters of gender. Here's the full citation: Je suis cissexuelle. Mais qu'est-ce que c'est au juste?, Claire Dumouchel, AlterHéros, 23-10-2010.
The title, translated, is: "I Am Cissexual. But What Is That Exactly?" What she means by "cissexual" is what we refer to as "cisgendered" (a word that doesn't exist in French--not yet, anyway). AlterHéros is a local GLBTQ resource whose mission is to provide peer support to local "allosexual" youth (i.e., youth whose sexuality is "other"--presumably, other than heterosexual). Their web site (in English): AlterHeros.
Although the author points out that the term "cissexual" (or "cisgendered"), in itself, is neutral (much like "heterosexual"), "cisgenderism" (or the author's own "cissexualism") connotes a moral superiority when it comes to gender, much like the word "heterosexism" does when it comes to sexual orientation. Cisgenderism, in other words, paves the way for discrimination on the basis of gender. As such, it feeds into the wider ocean of transphobia. The author's contention is the fact that transgender identities are still included in the DSM proves that our culture is one where "cisgenderism" is profoundly entrenched (much like heterosexism was the official order of the day before 1973, when homosexuality was removed from the DSM's list of disorders).
If you're interested, Anita, I could translate the article for you and maybe post it here (I know the forum's Admins frown on the practice of integral posting but it won't otherwise be available). It's not a very long article, and the author has an interesting viewpoint (one that not all may agree with).
Again, thanks to all for the kind words.
Love,
CJ
