I think the big difference between leggings and tights is the color of your panties. Leggings shouldn't need a top to cover up your panties because they shouldn't be showing through. With that said, I see some of the girls at Jazzercise wearing inexpensive pants and they manage to have a hint of their panties showing through.

Leggings can also be baggy where tights should never be baggy. lastly, leggings can have accents like zippers and rhinestones where I have never seen them on tights.

I wore my leggings last night with a red blouse top worn loose over them. They are not as tight fitting as tights but my wife seemed to like them and made no adverse comment. I am glad I bought them

Leggings should not be worn solely as pants. They should be considered accent pieces for skirts, tunics, long shirts. There is a wonderful video on Youtube for this topic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4IFZFiENGo

Earlier today I started a tread on how much I love the feel & fit of leggings, I didnt know that this thread existed, I am really surprised how much dislike of them there is. Well live & learn. 8)

I think the dislike come from people who feel they don't look good in them, which is understandable, and from folks who feel they are too informal.

The style reminds me of hiking outfits. Folks of both sexes would wear long underwear bottoms with hiking shorts over them. The shorts provided pockets and protection for the privates, and the leggings kept you warm but moved lightly and easily. They got rid of the sweat that could build up under rain/wind pants also, should the need arise. Then when it got warmer you could take them off and just wear shorts. Of course none of this worked if there was a lot of cactus around.
