I have distrusted Yahoo since the mid 1990's this is just the latest breach of trust I have seen from them.

Correction, it's not just Yahoo! but also Google and other (unnamed) email providers that performs this scan/read function:
Yahoo! is among a number of e-mail service providers which scans content.

Google mail, on its website, says it looks at the text of Gmail messages to filter spam and detect viruses.
Users have the ability to 'block' or 'unsubscribe' from that function, so if someone has concerns then they should opt out. However, those users must also be aware of any unintended consequences of that action, such as no longer being able to have an email account with that provider, which is a very real possibility.

I have never experienced any problems with any of my varied email providers, and I have at least 4 accounts with Yahoo!, and one each with Hotmail and Google. The automatic spam/bulk mail/junk mail filters from all of these providers is absolutely excellent, IMHO.

If you truly want to be sure that no one ever reads anything that you write, the obvious answer to that is to make sure you never write anything, in any format, and that includes forums (which are regularly visited by search engine bots, including this forum). Period. [-(

Also, if anyone has such a distrust of most things coming from or on the internet, then I guess they should just not have anything to do with the internet.

Personally, I prefer to not to be part of the "sky is falling", "doomsday" or hypochondriac crowd.

As long as their spam filters aren't being used to create more spam, I'm not bothered. After all, it's not like they have enough people working for them to read everyone's emails. Hopefully it's just a computer keyword search.

Besides, they don't know anything about my other side.

well I will weigh in on the side of "free email providers cannot be trusted." For me it is the same issue as with Facebook. They make their money by "harvesting information" from their users and anyone who is careless enough to fall into their clutches.
There have been many instances when, seconds after I replied to somebody with a hotmail, yahoo, or gmail account that I have been swamped by spam. Now, I absolutely refuse to send any email from my "clean" account to an account with a free email provider. Like Steve, I have a yahoo account that I use for collecting spam but I am very careful to keep real data away from it.
