Which wig to buy?

Hi,

A few months ago, I came into terms with the fact that I'm a crossdresser. Since then, I've bought several pieces of clothing, including shoes. My desire is to go out one day as a woman, in a city where I've got no relatives or friends, but the one thing that is still missing from my 'outfit' is a wig. I found this website with some amazing wigs on it, but I've got a few questions about them:

Most of the relatively cheap wigs are synthetic and I whould like to know from you if that is a problem? My goal is to look as much like a genetic woman as possible, so I want my wig to be as natural-looking as possible. Is a synthetic wig an option for me, or do you suggest to go for the human hair wigs?

My preferred wig is a good quality synthetic which I took a lot of time over choosing in a specialist wig shop, my other wig is a high end human hair one but the colour is just too scary on me so I haven't worn it out yet. My first wig was a cheapy from e-bay which served it's purpose until I bought my good one from Fosters in Streatham SE London.

I suspect with wigs you pretty much get what you pay for but beware that the styles you like to see on other women may not suit you try playing on a site like Daily Makeover

I have 5 wigs two are human hair and 3 are synthetic, I prefer the synthetic as they are far easyer to maintain.

A human hair wig is just what it is and you have to keep up with it just like a GG does, wash roll and style it I to this day still can not roll hair

Now Paula makes a very good point as to your face shape and skin tone as a wig will look good in a photo and look like crap on your head.

I love long hair but everyone who knows Carol tells me it makes me look alful and a short curly siyle is what I look my best in. My wife along with my sisters here are great with helping me out.

Nothing wrong with a synthetic wig, as long as the fibers aren't too thick and stiff.

As has been mentioned, trying on a wig in a wig shop is the best route to take to determine if it will suit your face, etc. Also, you'll want to make sure the wig cap is expandable/reducible to fit the size of your head.

The first wig I bought was online, and it didn't look as good on me as it did in the picture.

My second wig was bought in a wig shop.

My last wigs are synthetic. I got the same one in two colors. A good synthetic is better than a bad human hair and vice versa. Quality does matter, but you can find some decent inexpensive wigs when you shop in person. I bought a really good wig , which a year later, I still like. But aside from my satisfaction with the product, the best thing about it was the experience of buying it. I went to a wig shop, and a welcoming, enthusiastic, skillful woman helped me pick out just the right wig. You might buy cheaper online, but you will never match the experience , the customer service or the satisfaction. . Don't just walk in. Call first. Be upfront that you are shopping for a wig for yourself. You will know before you hang up the phone whether that store is welcoming to crossdressers or not. My guess is, most of them are. Think about it. It's a WIG shop. How many GG's that you know,actually wear wigs? I don't know any. Yet, ALL crossdressers need wigs. We are not the majority of their customers, but I am willing to bet we are a significant minority. The woman who fitted me for my wig confirmed that was the case for her shop. She was used to dealing with crossdressers; a customer is a customer.

If you don't mind revealing where you live I'm sure that one of us could recomend a shop not too far away from you. the lady who sold me my wig is well known in the local trans community, we are probably her second largestt market, after cancer sufferers so we are quite fun for her.

The two wigs I have I bought in a wig shop in South Africa, and I'm glad I bought them in person. Trying them on to be sure of the fit and style is critical. They were not really expensive, nor are they the best quality, but they work well for me.
I'd like to get a better quality one, and will when I have the money. The hair salon I go to here in town can do wigs and extensions and add-ins, and I think it's pretty common now to find places that can do it. So I'll have my regular hairdresser help me find the right thing, after all they are the experts on the subject. I would just rather spend a little bit more to get the exact right one, than take a chance buying something that I don't know what it's going to look like.

I bought two wigs from ebay, one is very nice, long light blonde, almost matches my color, yet it is too long. I need to buy a bigger head band to keep it out of my eyes, but I'd really like to get a shorter wig, maybe brunette.

I have to agree with those who say...go in for a fitting for your wig. There is nothing more important to your presentation than the hair on your head! I was scared %*&^less, but my dear wife pulled me through the door and I sat quietly while the person waiting on me tried several wigs on me. On about the eighth one or so, my face lit up, and I knew immediately THAT was the wig! I can't explain why, but from the moment it was put on my head, I knew it was the right one.

My wife agreed, as did the sales person....although I suspect she would always agree? LOL.

In any case, it's painless even if a bit frightening. But...it's well worth it. If you can....get someone to go with you for an impartil (non-commission related) judgement?

Oh...human hair I think.....I've had it for about 18 years and it is still just great. And...I wear it a lot!

Wearing a nice wig is the finishing touch for me to feel totally feminine, or is it letting my feminine side express itself fully...

I did the mail order thing and bought wigs that didn't fit and finally went to a wig shop and found a wig that fit and looked good and it was on sale for a reasonable price,

I have to save some money so I can get fitted, but for now, I was thinking of just trimming the wig I have, so it'll look better, as it is too long. Anyone ever try this?
