Which way to measure for a bra?

Which way to measure for a bra?

Post by Amanda Steele »

Hi Ladies,

I did search here, but didn't find an exact explanation, or rather the explanation on which way is correct.

Do you measure for a bra size, using the "add 4" to an even number or 5" to an odd" or do you just take the actual measurement rounding up on the odd?

I have read that both are practiced, with more saying that the former is old world and doesn't apply so much any more, and that most new bras are constructed to take advantage of a direct measurement.

What have you discovered?

I am searching for forms at the moment and will be buying ther ones that give me the largest projection or cup size, but don't want to have a sagging bra. I did phone a bra specialty shop and will most likely go in for a fitting once I have the forms, but would like to know my band size first in order to select an appropriate form. They said that they do three measurements: under the nipple line, and they do add, the fullest part of the bust, and just under the armpit. She said that for me, she would take the just under the nipple line and under the arm pit and split the difference, but stressed that I will want a snug bra.

Just curious if here I cold end the debate, as I am leaning more towards the direct measurement.

Thanks and love,

Amanda

I have been measured three times for a bra, all in the same week, and was given three different answers. For us it is only the band size that is really important and that is just the measurement around the chest, under the bust. I generally find that a 38 does, but some are tight. Remember that unlike the GGs we are not going to do ourselves any potential damage by wearing the wrong size. What size bra do I wear? ~ Any size I want to.

Just because you don't believe it, that doesn't mean it's not true

Hi Paula,

Thanks very much for the advice. I suppose that we are lucky in that we can change our cup size with our moods. One additional question though: for your band size, was it the actual measurement around the chest? or did you apply the add 4/5" rule?

Thanks again,

Amanda

Believe it or not, I have found my boy suit jacket size to be a fairly accurate measure of my bra (band) size. But, you really do just need to get a bra in the style you're liking and see how it fits. Every country has their own definition of how long an inch is. Every manufacturer adjusts that inch to their liking and finally the style twists and turns that inch...

Now for the size of the cup? That seems to be about eh only standard I know. But again, your size and your height changes the perception of how your cup size will look. So once you have the size of your bra, then you need to check out the different forms to see what size cup gives you the look you are trying for.

Huuummmm any excuse to go shopping in person if you ask me. Happy hunting! :)

Just an update, but I was measure and it turns out, what was measured, is my band size: 36

So I ordered my forms today from thebreastformstore.com. I ordered the Supremes with a nice black bra.

I also took the time to order the Hnery Margu Victoria Wig.

It is so exciting to be back!
