Hi Dolores. Having that passion is such a key thing. It took me a long time to find something I felt like that about - and when I did it opened up all sorts of areas within my life. Like it basically led to me being a fully mature person who achieved stuff. If, like I sense you have, you've got some power within you, you need somewhere to put that - and a passion gives you that.

Purely on the down-to earth level, passion in the area you want to get into is liable to make you creative. Like it may, in the end, allow you to think up something, to a degree, of your own in the field.

Anthony, thank you for that post. It sums up very well how I feel. I know this is a hard gig- there are so many graphic designers in general and I remember talking to someone in the graduate program I wanted to go to and they told me that if you didn't love this it would eat you up and spit you out in no time. But I do, and I have always been someone who strived to achieve and do the best I could. It's true, passion gives you that advantage. And it is true being a waiter, or a receptionist, anything- where you want to be the best- because you care about the details and are always thinking of how to make it better. I am just stressed because I do love it so much and I just want a chance to get out of the house and start a professional career.

Also, I am happy to hear you found something that makes you happy. :)

I don't know if this is any use to you, but there is a scene in the Watergate movie (based on Woodward and Bernstein's book) All the President's Men where the two reporters are called into Ben Bradlee's office and explain they haven't had any luck. Bradlee says "Get some." Following which they get all ruthless and directed and pressure a fellow reporter to get them a list of CREEP (Campaign to Reelect the President) employees. They then slog through this list, going over and back and over and back until finally they get the breakthrough - a bookkeeper who opens up.

I mean, that's one thing that passion allows you to do - have the capacity to slog through where otherwise you'd just give up. I don't know if that's what the person meant by having to love it or it'd eat you up and spit you out, but it might.
Also, I am happy to hear you found something that makes you happy. :)
Thank you, Dolores. :) I have a problem with money just at the moment. But with a bit of mind over matter....

It is Donna. I have gone through 8 years of college and have almost two degrees completed. I studied art and human cadavers and it has been quite an experience- and I still have to get accepted to a program. Mind you, one of them is John Hopkins (which I cant even afford to go anywhere near- 60,000 a semester!!! And only allows 2 students in at a time. Geez) So I have a narrow window. Still, I hoped I would have found a job somewhere that would appreciate a creative and scientific mind....anyone know any good fields that could use both?

I guess I like challenges alot. I have succeeded in school because of it. It is just disheartening to leave school and find no place to prove yourself- much less make enough money to feed yourself.

My biggest problem is that I have no real work experience and everywhere I go wants that. How do I get work experience if I cant get work?! I know there are internships- but I cannot afford it. I just applied to Kmart because we have no money left to even get groceries. I guess I have to postpone things for a while longer..

Hello girls!

I interviewed for an amazing job (a dream job) two weeks ago and then heard nothing back. My husband told me to let it go but I felt sure it was for me. I was starting to give in- why would such an amazing job call me when the local supermarket wouldn't? They contacted me today. I have it! Not only am I finally hired somewhere- but it is the kind of job you only hear about. I have no idea what will happen but used to feel like good things never happened to me, like good opportunities would float by me and never materialize- then I met my husband and for the first time I thought that maybe I was wrong. After a year of unemployent, of darker and darker days, a ray of sunshine comes through and makes it all worth it.

I just wanted to thank you ladies for helping me through difficult times.

Dolores, I'm glad you've gotten a break, and hope that the beginnings of the job go well for you. Anya, hold on tight. We have food on the table, but little else at the moment, so I know something of your feelings.. It is not easy to re-invent oneself in the late 50s (you)-early 60s (me), and I'm sorry your other profession has 'gone away.'
