Hmm...yeah...
I got caught the first time out. I was about 5 or 6 and had been watching my sister get ready for a date. I thought her blue hose (popular at the time - early seventies) looked cool, and wondered what it was like to wear them. So after she left on her date, I slipped the door to her room shut, and tried on a pair. Wow! I was in heaven. This was the best thing since the Big Wheel! I was so into the moment, I didn't even notice my sister had come back to gather some forgotten item.... :o
Hmm...yeah...
Well of course she yelled for Mom, and I thought a quick death was looking pretty good right then. Mom, being a very conservative, properly raised southern Christian lady, acted accordingly - outraged. I was sent promptly to my room.
Now (and you know this as much as I), this was my mother's tactic of using psych warfare on her child. She, I'm sure, figured that this would cure my curiousity, or end up embarrasing me, and that would be the end of things. But instead I learned two important things...
Hmm...yeah...
First, the moral lesson - Don't get caught!
Second, I was hooked like a coke-fiend! I was in the kind of euphoria reserved for the 3-hit-pixie-dust-sugar-coma, just walking around in my blue jeans and new hose underneath. I loved the feeling it brought out in me, and I smiled every time I caught sight of them showing in the gap between my jeans and sneakers.
The hose soon wore out and went away, alas, not to be replenished. But I took it well and moved on. To makeup! My sister is still amazed to this day at how fast she went through makeup back then.
And mom? Maybe she noticed there was an occasional extra pair of panties in the wash that dissappeared by the end of the dry cycle. But then again, she adopted the strategic policy later to be known worldwide as "don't ask, don't tell" (a policy still in place today). It was her way of coping, and I wasn't about to mess with it - especially since the hose incident never reached the ear of the highly explosive, occasionally violent, dad.
So there! The beginning of Miss Toni Divine. And if you read this far, thanks for letting me share!
