Ear rings

Post by Anne Bonny »

I have some very nice 1.25" and .75" weighty gold tone clip on hoops that I really really like. Have not made the jump to pierced ears but may at some point. My wife has quite a collection for pierced ears and she will never wear them with advanced alzheimer's, at her wake of course. Believe me I am not laying an eye on her collection, not sure how I will feel and may just give them to her female cousins I don't really know but would seem a shame, perhaps I will just keep them to look at as memorial items or as a reminder is what I mean - sniff - but...I am on the topic of ear rings.

I know there are bangles that dangle like wind chimes, hoops seem to be a pretty classic style, and there are those that are essentially variations on the bob theme all different sizes and shapes. There are "fun" ear rings and ear rings to wear on holidays, and for any occasion. I suppose I am only sure of one thing and that is that I like to feel the weightiness of ear rings on my lobes reminding me that they are reflecting my feminine spirit burning within and that brings a sense of peace and satisfaction perhaps even a smile, in short I like them.

Beside the classic hoop style I have zippo. I suppose I will have to go shopping on line to view the different styles that strike my girly fancy.

Dear Anne,

I'm sure cousin's would appreciate some of your wife collection, when she's departed. But why not keep some for yourself? As a remembrance.

Earrings. Certainly the ones for special occasions and holidays are for fun. Day to day, I wear small hoops or studs to match the outfit and/or mood. My sets are smaller in size, while my hubby tends toward the weight and sway styles for the same reasons you describe.
Long dangles tend to get caught in hair, clothing and scarves. Heavy earrings will give you a headache toward the end of the evening. Clip ons are worse for earaches. So, get your ears pierced, you'll not regret it. And take advantage of the collection at hand.

Thanks, hearing advice from an SO is appreciated, I like hearing what women have to say. I suppose that I could, after all I did purchase some of them for her and am sure they would be more comfortable. Will have to check out having them pierced, just tell people I am a sailor which is true. I do like my hoops. Pat did too (I mean hers on her).

There are a lot of guys who have both ears pierced and most people pay no attention to it any more. No need to lie about it, just say you decided to get your ears pierced and that's all there is to it.

A friend of mine was ahead of the times because he had his ears pierced in the early 1980's - it was a big deal back then (right ear only = straight, left ear = gay, both = weird) but that was more than 30 years ago . . . we've come a long way, baby!

I dont know if you have Claire's or Icing your way, Anne. I used to by a lot of clips from them. Icing is a little more "upscale" if you can call it that.

Clips are adjustable. It just depends on your strength to bend the u shape or if they have a screw adjustment. Some forms of clip actually have a tool for adjusting the bend and the tension of the springy part.

I've been buying clips that also have a screw adjustment so that once I get it adjusted for my ears I can just clip/unclip them.

One important thing to remember about clips, your two ears aren't the same so you will need to remember which clip fits which ear best.

Oh, and I wear every style but the very long dangles. I have some noisy ones, ones that get caught in the hair, hoops (yeah a compression spring in a hoop so they look like they go thru the ear), holiday ones, and others.

Piercing is a done deal once it is done. Not sure if I would regret it, as I grow as a transgender person I think I might eventually have no regrets. Clips for now work thanks for the sites Davita and the info on adjustments. Quality ear rings are nice and worth the little extra, no more cheap stuff under $15...

I'm so glad I got my ears pierced, even though some of my family did try to make some comments about it. I have no regrets about that at all.
It's great to have so many options and styles, like Eileen said, to suit whatever mood I'm in and to match my outfit.
Sometimes I like the big dangly ones when I'm in a bohemian mood and wearing a peasant skirt and tunic, but I guess I prefer a classy silver with some stones. Wearing jewelry is not allowed in the factory where I work (for safety & hygenic reasons) so it just depends on what I'm doing over the weekend.

A few years ago, after much soul-searching ( what will people think??? ) I decided that being asked impertinent questions would be an acceptable risk, and I got both earlobes pierced at almost age fifty. I have not regretted it. Now I can wear all pierced earrings, including some beautiful handmade REAL turquoise jewelry that I inherited. So many men have their ears ( and other parts ) pierced, that it is a non-issue to most folks.
I would recommend it to any CD who can deal with domestic fireworks. Probably not worth losing a GOOD wife over.

ok, so what are the practical day to day issues?

After piercing, I understand you need to wear some form of earing - even if its a gold post - for some time (how long?). Otherwise, the wound will just heal shut. So if you have to do this, how long.

After the break in period, how often do you have to put something in your ear.

If you are going without ear rings, are the holes evident? I'm starting to scout this out, but any advanced info would be appreciated.

I'd love to do this, but (my perceived) need am concerned about doing it under the radar.

There are I understand posts that are not as apparant? I also know if you are close enough to observe anyone's pierced earlobe that the dimple is apparent but there are ways to minimize this too. I remember hearing this when I was in the military because being transgendered my ears were attuned to things like that. Could be some itty bitty fleshtoned tape like substance, or even perhaps a small bit of matching make-up. Hopefully someone here with more indepth knowledge can fill us in.

The technician punched the holes, then installed small hoop earrings made for new piercings. Had to wear them 24/7, even while sleeping, for thirty days. Then, take them out, clean the holes, and wear whatever earrings or studs I want. How long you can go without anything in the holes before they close up, I dunno. I wear relatively unobtrusive studs during the day, no one says diddly. Take them out for sleeping. My guess would be that the fresher the holes, the faster they might close up, but I'm unsure.
As far as hiding the holes, one place I worked at had a strict no-jewelry policy. ( Food plant ) My co-worker got his left lobe pierced, and threaded a piece of fishing monofilament through, and a small band-aid over it. Kept the job, and the hole.

So far I use and like clip on (antique) earrings. I prefer rhinestones, not too big, or, with semi precious stones in the middle. Sometimes I like to look Modern and have found 60's or 50's Mod ones like black and white or white dangling. Recently I found some circular black/white striped...very nice. But, these clip ons eventually (after a few hours) become so "pinchy" and hurt my ears. A girl tying to have a good time can't have pain in the ear lobes..can she?

Anne, and the rest of you ladies, get your ears pieced and quit worrying about! Unless a spouse will object, no one else gives a darn anymore. No one sees a guy with a hole in the lobes and thinks, "must be a cross dresser." With all the kids now days with hog rings, lip and tongue pierced, a middle age guy wearing studs is now normal.
Unless you find yourself sensitive to certain metals, you'll be browsing the sale jewelry every chance. There are so many more choices and colors. My guy and I now have one shared earring stand. Keeps the dresser top neater and everything is one size fits all. Though, I wonder about some of his choices.
