Over the years I have had one stick her nose up at me and a few reluctant to help. I figure I am not going to change their minds and not worth dealing with. So I just move on to the next place. But it was just those SA's and not the stores as I have been back and the SA's were good.

shopping for me

Post by Janet Bern »

I can say that when I say I am shopping for me it removes any reservation that the SA may have held. When enfemme it is usually easier but I have NEVER had a problem with SAs in drab either and I am 6'2

Merle Norman beauty boutiques are great if you have one near you...they make many excellent foundations, even thicker ones as a beard cover...the lady who owns the one I frequent is great, very friendly...she has told me, "You are not the only guy who comes in here"...that's a good thing.
I typically shy away from mall stores & prefer Avenue, they are located in strip malls & the one I go to is great...I go in when they open at 10 am and the girls have been great...the first time I went in there I was looking for a couple of tops, a pair of gorgeous gladiator sandals with 2" heels & a pair of cork wedge heels with gold straps...(LUV THOSE SHOES ;-)...the one girl I do not think had any experience with crossdressers and seemed like she did not want to say the wrong thing, the other girl was a pro, super nice, knew right away I was there for me, she told me if I wanted to try anything on and did not feel comfortable there was another dressing room towards the back of the store, she even measured my feet withthat little metal foot measure thingy...AND complimented my pedicure and nail polish...she made me feel welcome and I always go there.

Macys

I always go to the Clinique counter at Macys for my makeup. I always have been treated wonderfully whether or not I am enfemme or en drab. I love it.

In over 30 years of being "out" I have had no more than a handful of bad experiences from SA's. :) I have found the more upscale the store he better the service regardless of how I am attired and Macy's qualifies as upscale in that regard.

Back n the early 90's it was New Years Eve and realized I was running low on Dermablend so I wanted to get some so I had it for the party that night. I was already dressed for the evening so into Macy's I went in a silver lame floor length cocktail dress and 4" heels. I know I got more than a casual stare from the customers milling about but the SA was professional and complimented me on the dress. I will always be a Macy's girl!

Dear God Trudy you must have been a sight! I don't know that I have ever gone that far but I did once stop at Penney's to pay my bill on the way to the club in a black leather mini, black leather jacket and 5" CFM pumps!

I def have to look into this dermablend, as I like to keep my goatee, but after reading these nice posts, I may have to stop at Macy's for some help too.

Wow, it is so sad that I posted in this thread two years ago, and still haven't gone to Macy's for help with clothing. It is definitely on my list for things to do this year. I really need to get myself measured. How do you approach the salesperson, "excuse me, I need some help with women's clothes for myself, or is there another, more discrete way of saying it? Thanks.

Samantha I have asked for help two different ways. One way is just to start shopping in a full service store and a clerk will come around and ask if you need help. Now here is the tough part, you need to say "YES". This is the way I usually use unless I am really looking for something specific.

The other way is to walk in the store and scope out the first SA you can see, walking up to them and asking "Can you help me"?

As for stating you are shopping for you, do not make a production out of it. In fact you do not even need to state you are shopping for you until you are asked who it is for. Then you just say "it is for me" then continue the shopping conversation.

Shop and enjoy,

Kimberly, that is good advice for shopping. I have gone many times and still could not reach out to say I needed help. I will have to give it a try

Erica, a key to both of my methods is to go into a full service store. NOT wallymark, kmart, target, shopko,.. you do not want to be running down a SA as you will quickly loose your nerve. It must be a full service store that has sales associates that will reach out to help you. Then the hard part for you is to say "YES I NEED SOME HELP". Real stores with real SA's will say hi to you and ask if you need help usually within a minute of you entering the store. Many even try to keep a SA at the front of the store just to do this. Also timeing can be important. Mornings during the week can be a good time to go into the stores as they is usually when the managers are there and they are usually very attentive and helpful.

Another tip that I was once told which has helped me a lot is:
Act like a serious shopper, be a serious shopper, be treated like a serious shopper.
A serious shopper goes into a store with intent to buy something and usually does. Start out with something small and become a repeat customer. SA's remember repeat customers and how you treat them. Treat them and the other customers with respect and it will come back to you.

One other thing that helpped me is go into a store with an item you are looking to buy so when they ask if they can help you know what you need help with. Start with some thing small or easy, like "I am are looking for a maxi skirt" or "I am looking for a top to go with my dark denium skirt".

Go forth, shop, have fun.

Some great sales stories, I have been wanting to get some foundation that is right for my skin color. After reading all the positive experiences I feel I can go up to a SA and ask for help.
