Costuming For Halloween

Post by Martha G »

I am looking forward to my Halloween costume event this year.

I will be dressing as a Southern Belle. I will be in a beautiful red hoopskirt supported by a hooped petticoat filed with lace. The petticoat measures 115" around.

I also will have a southern belle brown wig and a beautiful hat with a lovely red feather in it.

The attire will also have a string purse, a red lace parasol, a nice cape and a pair of long pink gloves.

Earrings and broach will be added as well.

And to top everything off, I will be wearing a pink satin pair of bloomers with plenty of lace. I will have to lift my skirt often! LOL!

And my shoes will be a comfortable pair since no one can see them under my hoopskirt. However, they will be ladies shoes.

I am looking forward to the party and have been doing much better with my makeup.

I can hardly wait

That sounds lovely, Martha! Some of you gals here enjoy wearing the big, hooped skirts, something I've never tried. When you sit down, does the hoop fly up over your head? How difficult are potty breaks?

Still, it'd be a lot of fun to get all decked out like you do.
Oh, and you must wave your little fan and say, "Fiddle Dee Dee."

I have learned the technique of moving about and sitting in my hoop skirts

I have also learned to potty while dressed in big skirts. Needless to say I need sit down. But I try not to drink too much so I don't have to go.

I also have a nice little red lace fan that I enjoy using and will definitely say fiddle dee dee. Oh my!

Martha, we are not being fair to our younger sisters here. Fiddle dee dee comes from the movie, 'Gone With the Wind'.
Which given today's thought police should be banned forever.

Your outfit sounds lovely Martha. I have never tried a true hoop skirt but for Halloweens past I have worn a wedding gown complete with a voluminous petticoat as well a 50`s poodle skirt with the requisite crinoline and saddle shoes. They do take some getting used to both in sitting ladylike as well as in the powder room. To me the biggest problem was getting in and out of the car, I had a Mustang. At least I had the forethought to wear a pair of square dancing style pettipants. True they were all frilly and bright orange! A sharp contrast from the white crinoline still they did help hide my garters and stocking tops from full public view somewhat.

I have always thought that it would be fun to try something like your costume or maybe a Victorian era costume. Where do you get yours Martha?

I had this costume made. But that was long ago. Too expensive to go that route today.

I love wearing large hoop skirts.

Today in the middle of the day I happened to drive by the Louisa May Alcott house in Concord , Massachusetts. Two young docents were out in the yard talking to tourists in the 90degree heat in Hoop skirts and long sleeves!

Of course, in those days, as far as I know, women did that all the time. Those little women were tougher than I am.

Your costume sounds fantastic Martha. I at this time I can only dream of the day when I would be able to dress in period apparel.

Marvelous!!! Both options you mentioned earlier sounded great, and I know how much you invest in them. I look forward to the photos Martha. :)
