How do we pass?

Post by Virginia »

Article: May 2004: "Glamour" page 216 - 217. "One factor must be acknowledged: We'er heavier than we've ever been and weight certainly complicates the process of body acceptance. In 1991, women in their twenties weighed, on average 142 pounds, compared with 155 now; women in their thirties weighted an average of 154 pounds, compared with 167 now." Passing based on concern over weight? What 200 pounder could not, if properly dressed, look the average of 167 pounds?
Just a thought!

Deborah,

How did I previously miss this post??? :-k

You bring up a great point. What do you do when you weigh in excess of 300. It's hard to make that look like 167. It hard to make that look like 225! I'm working on getting it down to where I can make it look like 167 but it sure seems to take longer to lose it than it did to get it there. :((

Perfect topic! :)

I am tall, so people are always thinking I'm skinnier/lighter than I am. So if they push me (playing around) or anything they always go to push me really light, but end up running into me because they think they are going to move me and I don't move. :)

Kind of funny. The best I felt was at the end of last year when I came ooooh so close to getting in a size 12 dress. I had dropped mega weight. Then I started with a cola here and a late night snack there and voila I was 15 lbs heavier in like a month and a half. It's easy to put that on, but not so easy to take off again.
:((

It was Julie's post (our first Julie) that stopped me from getting any heavier because she motivated me to get dressed again by one of her posts about dressing. (I'm sorry to those who have heard me say that a kazillion times)

Anyway, I'm back to where most of male clothing is too big and about 1/3 of my femme wardrobe is too big. However I'm still not back to 199 like I was when I was super close to getting into a size 12. The dress was soooo pretty too. :crying: It's good to wear an L size and not an XL in dresses and skirts too. By that I mean it's awesome motivation!

Thanks Deborah (twin) for starting this thread. :)

Hi there my Sister Twin, and all you other sisters.

I have been 15-20 lbs. over weight most of my life. I hated my pot belly until the day I finally acknowledged and accepted that Darlene was here to stay. It was then that I began to love my body including my pot.

That is probably the main reason I do not aspire to attempt to pass. If I have to look like a woman in order to pass, it requires that I do something about my pot. That would mean I could not feel good about myself, and I am not prepared to go there.

Loving; feeling good about myself in spite of my imperfections is my highest propriety.

Hey girls,
Interesting topic.
Until this year, I have had no real desire to pass in public. And I was a tad bit overweight, too.

But when I decided to brave the world outside, I knew I needed to shed a few. What motivation! I dropped 30 lbs. like it was nothing. Talk about a real mood uplifter! I was (and am) amazed at how good I feel about it.

I say this not to brag, but to show what determination and aspiration can do. Not to mention what it does for one's self esteem.

As always, I'm just putting in my two bits.
Hugs,
Kyra

I guess I should tell about my continuing transition. Deborah makes herself more and more 'vocal" almost daily now. The latest, I got up to get a snack and in searching the fridge for something, my eyes fell upon a piece of cheese cake. I swear to God, Deborah came out and I could hear her almost yell at me - NO WAY!! NOT ON MY HIPS!!! Guess what - that piece of cheese cake is still sitting in the fridge, but we are short one small apple! Guess I am really starting to merge my two personnas and it is wonderful!!

I just can't get the weight off. I used to look so trim. Now at 195 I feel like I have lost total control, and don't know where to start. I have absolutely no motivation to go home at the end of the day and work out. Did you notice the word "work" in work out? Did I mention I just came home from work? I just want to vegge out and put on the tube in the evening. I think I have given up. I long for the slim days, but don't feel I will ever get there again. I need to say "no" to the cheesecake, donuts and two cans of pop I have for dinner, and maybe pick up an apple also.

Nuff Luv until I find that apple,

Erica Shade

Hi,

We're pretty much the same height. 190 is outstanding!! :) I haven't been 190 since college and I was a stick. lol!

Bravo!

I hate 215. [-( People still call me thin @ 215 because there's no belly, but I still would prefer going to the 190's. I'm on the doorstep of the 190's but it's taken discipline and patience.

Take care,
Beauty

Atkins or South Beach makes my weight go away. I did Atkins for a while, but I like South Beach better. You get more veggies and it takes into account more of the fiber, etc that block carbs.

Hi again,

Thank you for the best wishes!!

Very cool about being 165 in college! :) I wore a 30 in college. I was pushing 175 wet. :)

It's so funny how I thought I was fat. #-o Immediately after college I got a decent job in my last semester and I got up to a 32 and that was when I was 185. :)

Since you got to 190 once recently, I'm sure you'll break the barrier and blast past it. =D>

I wish you all the best too!!

I have been working with my spouse for the past 25 years. She is 5”8” and now weighs 256lbs. No, she weighed less before this previous weigh-in at the doctors. She is a type II diabetic, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

I say this with no judgment intended. She has inherited certain genetic factors from her mother that suffered from the same three factors before her death several years ago from a heart attack based on a weakness in a portion of her heart.

So that said, I on the other hand am 6’ 0” and weigh in at 148lbs, when just 10 years ago, I weighed in at 170lbs with an obvious pot showing, small but obvious to me. In seeing that picture, I decided to take steps to remedy the situation. Nothing too drastic mind you. No crazy diet, just smaller portions and reducing the fat intake that I was getting in the morning at the Kennedy Space Center dinning hall. Those breakfasts were grrreat, but they were going to kill me in the future.

Like giving up cigarettes 35 years ago, I decided not to continue with the morning eating habit that I formed and reduced things gradually until I had better control. All this from someone that weighed in at 125lbs, when 18 years old. Now, age 56, I am 148lbs al natural out of the shower and no sign of any pot, none,…..!

For what it is worth, a non-powered walking mower, gas engine type, and morning exercise for 10 mins 5 days a week, (stretch exercises only), and any time I thought about it I did the “stomach pull in and hold” over and over. Sitting, standing, driving, when ever I thought about it I did it! Less than two years and I was around 155lbs and no pot. I have not changed anything since then except how many calories I get from fatty foods.

Make no mistake! This is not that easy nor is it going to be cut and dry for anyone. NO ONE CAN DO IT FOR YOU! I am 38 29 35 and I can wear a nice size 10 skirt and a size 12 – 14 dress if it is cut well with no problem breathing ha ha LOL. I have earned that with my own personal interest in my appearance and perhaps a little to do with my genes?

Some people just put their hand to their mouth to often or with the wrong type of food or the quantity. Then just sit and watch television. I have seen what this does to a person on a wholesale level with my spouse. “You can lead a girl to water but you can’t make her drink.” So, girls….., it really is up to you and what you are comfortable with. Eat less, burn more….. a simple formulae but we all know that it is not that simple in reality.

Some people are “social eaters,” others, private types that put on weight just reading a food magazine, ( not really girls ), that’s not how your metabolism really works. I just want to say that it does not matter what any of us say here, nothing is going to happen until YOU make your mind up that is what YOU want and then proceed to take charge. All the books and diet pills cannot compete with the spirit and will of an individual that has decided to plan their life and the condition of their “Space Suit” for living.

Your on earth, you have a soul, you wear a “space suit” [body] so everyone can see and recognize you. Simple! No judgment! How long do you want to live in this life form? What are YOU willing to do to make it happen? Do you really want it? If not, then girls…., it ain’t goin’a happen any time soon.
:) :) :)

Hugs

Listen to us! We're all talking about how we wish we weighed less... we're such typical women!

But anyway, Danielle had some very excellent suggestions... there really is no need for any of these fad diets that are out nowadays, with Atkins this and Trimspa that... I truly believe that we all have different body types and different things work for different people.

In recent years I have begun to eat more fruit and salad and drink lots of water and juice. But I still love my share of burgers and pizza and fried chicken and ice cream. And in all honesty I don't want to give those up. I'll take it in moderation today so I won't have to give it up tomorrow.

Plus even though I don't currently belong to a gym I get plenty of exercise 7 days a week. I am in between cars right now so I do a LOT of walking. I also do a LOT of landscaping at my mother's house which involves lots of heavy lifting and sweating.

About 7 or 8 years ago I was well over 225. :(( How did I shed 50+ pounds within 8 months? What worked for me was that I did not give up any of my fave foods - I began drinking lots of orange juice and started mountain biking. The orange juice gave me energy and helped me to feel full. That was it. And after a few weeks the pounds began to just come off!

Thank you Deborah for the kind words. Rather that draw attention to myself, for which, genetics plays a key role, I hope that my previous posting tells people that I am not without experience in this area of weight gain and dieting.

I was once told that "everything in moderation," is the key to a healthy life. I have learned that there is more to it than that of course. The State is quick to point to a lottery winner, not the 10 million losers every saturday night not to even consider the other days of the week and chance games.

So, if you expect to win the "weight" lottery, forget it. The chances/odds are better if YOU decide when the time is right for YOU, and make the changes slowly, deliberately, and kindly. Two years compared to a lifetime is rather trivial, so if you start today, you can be there by this day, 2006. It is just around the corner and you do not have to break a sweat to do it. The solution to polution is dilution. The solution to a weight change is portion reduction and a little lawn mowing.

:) :) :)

Hugs
