I used to pull out my science facts on my spouse, but after 25+ years of talking and being exacting and specific, I grew tired of talking to the chalk board. The "Hatfield's and the McCoy's" have an entirely different way of dealing with life.

What works for one may not work for another. Not the science, not the physics of it, that is pretty much understood. No, it is the psychological science that is still a mystery. Why one person sees the light and does something, another, seeing the same information, continues on their original path without any consideration for what was said or read.

The WHY?, when we have that, we will have a variety of settings that explain peoples motives and reasons for their personal condition.

WAIT!

Do not eat that pizza! Not after you run. Carbs are to be eaten before you run for a burst of energy as they convert to sugar very quickly. Flour, white rice and white bread as examples, convert to glucose as fast as table sugar. Eating the pizza afterward only causes you to go into a vicious cycle of eating to feed the carbo monster. Eat, then your hungry again. Eat, then hungry again.

Having been exposed to diabetes through the spouse, you learn a great deal about biology and chemistry quickly, even more than what I had been exposed to in College.

Starchy whites convert very quickly into glucose (body sugar) then if not used are stored immediately as fat. Menawhile during this process, your body kicks in more insulin to help the cells absorb the sugar in your bloodstream. Type II diabetics have what is called "insulin resistance." Over time, it takes more and more insulin from the pancrease to move the sugar into the cells.

Evenutally, a type II diabetic must control their sugar intake by monitoring their blood sugar and the food quantity and combinations that they eat. THe USA is in the mist of a major epidemic of type II diabetes. This is no joke. It has been published all over the place. If you are overweight by 30 lbs or more, or if your male waist line is more than 40inches, or 35inches for females, and you carry most of your weight in the middle, you are at serious risk for diabetes and should have a fasting check done by your doctor.

Diabetes, can cause blindness, skin problems and foot problems, even amputation of the limbs in most serious cases. For those of you that do not know and meet that minimum number around the waist, please consider what I say and have a simple fasting test done by your doctor. It is believed today that if you score on this fasting test more than 110 in blood sugar that you MIGHT become type II diabetic in the future. If you score 140 or higher, you are type II diabetic.

People should look up the American Diabetes Association web site and read up on this most important topic. I say this with the upmost honesty and concern. Really. No one is immune from this dreadful condition.

I think it is safe to say that yes, glucose goes first if you are talking about someone that is in the “normal” range with regard to body chemistry. For the most part, glucose is converted into energy, then as Cheryl pointed out, glycogen from the liver is released and converted into glucose, (this can cause diabetics problems when they sleep. Their sugar drops and the liver kicks in with the glycogen and when they awake they can be on a sugar high, 160 – 190) and then finally the body will give up the fat that it has stored for a body emergency.

Xxxthousands of years ago, (we are still using much of that chemistry still), our bodies learned to store fat for the “lean” times, which came often and on a regular basis. With that kind of programming and the plethora of food today, we end up with “fat” bodies that are cumbersome to carry around. Our knees begin to give out under the pressure and the cartilage than breaks down gives way to osteoarthritus. My spouse has that condition as well in the right knee and some in the left. All pretty much due to weight of course over the years. The questions that are being considered these days are what are causes and what are effects or results from the causes. Free-floating fat in the blood stream is thought to have a direct link to how insulin can affect cells to take in sugar. There currently is some correlation to the type of fat as well.

This explains perhaps why so many type II diabetics also have high cholesterol readings and related high blood pressure. We call it the triple whammy in medical circles. After 25 years of research, and 2 full 3 inch 3-ring binders, I have been down the road and back again. If you meet the middle body fat concept, and the simple female 35” waist or 40” male waist specification, that’s about all you need to know before considering a simple inexpensive test to determine how your body is handling blood sugar. The test, hemoglobin A1c (HA1c) test can give an indication for the past 90 days of living as to how you handled your blood sugar.

Currently, the medical community is calling the “triple whammy” [Syndrome X]. This is sometimes called “insulin resistance syndrome” or “metabolic syndrome.” My daughter-in-law that lives just 5 minutes away has been an RN for the past 10 years and while she is well versed in obstetrics, she was surprised by some of the information that I have collected over the years.

A very good web site for up-to-date information and not run by the American Diabetes Association is run by Rick Mendosa at:

http://www.mendosa.com Rick is a freelance writer in Aptos, California and has diabetes most of his adult life. He has made it is life’s work to provide information to the public that otherwise may not get out do to political restrictions in the Amer. Diabetes Assoc.

I trust his work and he provides a very good “glycemic index” to compare foods for their conversion level. To explain further, white bread converts into body glucose as quick as a table spoon of cane sugar or 15 sun dried raisins. It seems like we are paying too much attention to detail here but, your body normally handles this function and when it stops, well, you have to become the external monitor and calculator 24/7/365……
If you are overweight and over 40 years of age, running can be dangerous. Not just from on-coming motorists, but rather from the damage that you are doing to the knees. Damage that is difficult to undue later in life with an artificial knee replacement which is typically good for 15 years. It is not 100% perfect so you may need a cane from time to time during humid spells. Thus another whammy. You run to lose weight, you lose the weight but in the end, if done often enough, you damage the all import knees. Today, osteopathic surgeons are in demand as baby boomer runners, are showing up with extensive knee joint damage and racquetball champions are at the head of the list.

It all looked very macho 30 years ago, now these same people that wore their testosterone on their sleeves are paying for it many times over. Great care needs to be considered before beginning any form of exercise when overweight or not. Today there are specialists that can help people with a proper program that can save your knees and perhaps help extend your life.

Men need to park their testosterone and start reading as women do to find what is right for them. This is not a case of who is right or wrong, the results are in from the past 30 years of on the street testing. They are in the various medical offices here in Florida in droves. I should have ignored electronics engineering and systems engineering and took the MCATS and went to medical school for as much time as I have spent in the general field of medicine for loved ones.

This is not an exam Cheryl, it is not about looking good here, it's about living a longer life without a pat on the back. Iam providing the best data that I know about so if it just helps one person, then I will have succeeded in my efforts. You have provided some very good points that others should consider as well.

"Syndrome X" is very real today and for those that are over their appropriate weight, it could be only a matter of time before you get the message the hard way, then there is no going back, you just learn to maintain your health as it is, wishing not to slip any further down the life line that can be helped.
Do not thank me. Get up and stretch and walk around the block!

I must apologize for my last responce for it was rather harsh and that is not me at all. I try not to be judgemental or opinionated but when it comes to this health issue I am dead serious as that is what some will be soon enough if they do not take it seriously.

Running, jumping, whatever floats your boat should be the rule of the day. What did "Nike" say, "Just do it! :) :) :)

Sorry girls, I get a little close to home and go bananas....
Sorry Cheryl, I have seen people all to often in this forum let their testosterone fly just to be right about something mean while, the patient dies.

Ok it seems Im not alone on the weight issue. I know I need to loose more than a few pounds, and I already have a large build, so its not like I will ever be petite.
Since my wife has quit smoking, (3 months now) we have both gained some more unwanted weight, but I know my vices, and am working constantly on changing my habits.
As far as running goes I will not do that for 2 important reasons
#1 is that it foams up your beer
#2 is that its always the joggers that find the dead bodies in the park,,,,
no way,, not me !!!!!!!

A girl with a sense of humour, good for you Cindy!

Now that I have calmed down and returned to reason, I think this thread was about "passing," not dieing. So, I have a client in the business of public accounting. She is 6' 1" and I will guess, about 320lbs. What one may refer to us a "fullback" or is that "halfback", I stopped watching football when I was in my early 20's. The spouse guards the remote like a bull dog with a bone,    ....

Anywho... she is a very nice person (type II diabetic) and I often thought of those that are of the male persuasion in the T* family and how they must feel to have such a structure to work with. Well, you will stand out of course as this woman does, but with a short pixie cut, a purse and some demablend if necessary, you may not be as obvious as you think.

I have the same feeling with the thin fram at 6' so perhaps we have something in common. Perhaps it is just our way of thinking, knowing the basis from which we come, and what we try to appear to be, perhaps there is a small "bug" in the back of our minds making things more obvious than they really are.

Yesterday, I was out driving in a great dress, pink/peach with beauftiful red and yellow flowers, a full length feature very spring/summer like in a short hair doo that I favor, (older women typically do not have long hair as it becomes prone to breaking more so they cut it shorter), and some one was staring at me at a stop light. I am in a Ford XLT 2003 explorer, with the factory tinted windows which are light tinting in the drivers area.

I thought that this person had made me, but as the light turned green and we proceeded forward the middle aged man gave me a hi-ya wave, so he was not starring he ws just "dreaming,   ."

I must admit the dress does draw attention for it's color and style. I will post it in the photo section for people to judge.

So, perhaps we are more sensitive about this than is justified. After all, they have not hung any T* girls lately that I know of. We just need to be careful and not give some poor lonely guy the "come hither" glance and smile, ya' know girls    . Stay out of dark coners and places of ill-repute.

Some men are into "full-figured" gals! More to love!

Hugs

For those that may have noticed, I am back - sort of.

I lost 87 pounds on Phentermine two-three years ago. It was risky but I felt so good. The whole time I was constantly reprimanded by mother and SO that I was not eating enough. Duh! That is how I lost the weight!

Unfortunately I did not address all the factors that caused my obesity in the first place, so I have regained 55 of those awful pounds in the last two years.

A sedentary job with a 9 1/2 hour workday - coupled with an hour of commute on each end - makes for a very out of shape me even with mowing the lawn and shoveling the driveway, and taking the stairs at work. At my heaviest (267) I was still excercising nearly an hour on the Nordic Trak 4-5 nights a week.

Another factor (not placing blame) was my SO's lack of interest in losing weight. Now with my recent cardiac scare, I think maybe she is now hip to the sobering fact that obesity is now the number one killer in the US today.

My cardiologist recommended the South Beach diet. Not thinking much about fad diets, I was very reluctant to try it, though two things kept bothering me. The South Beach and Atkins diets actually have some clinical evidence that is encouraging. Eating carbohydrates of any kind seems to make me hungrier just an hour later.

I am only 62 hours into this (and they say I need two weeks to see results) but already I have lost some weight, and have had more self control than ever (except when I was on the Phentermine).

Unfortunately, my weight centers on my waistline. I can look a little better by going to bigger boobs and wearing hip pads, but it doesn't really help. A healthy weight is the best solution.

I'll check back with you in a week or two and let you know what I think then.

Hugs,

Bernice

Danielle,

I just looked at your 2 pictures of the peach/pink dress. No wonder you got admiring glances - I wonder how many of us thinking "wow - I wish I could look that good in such a beautiful dress"

Bernice,

I wish you good luck with your battle of the bulge. My weight centers around my waist, too. My wife has diabetes controlled by oral meds and diet, so she watches her diet VERY closely and also helps me make healthier choices than I would on my own.

My main downfall is the after dinner eating. Since I started CDing at home in the evening and going on the internet (not eating while surfing), I'm not eating as much and I'm about 15 pounds lighter.

Cindy,

I get to do a lot of walking in my work, but don't plan on going jogging - I need a definite destination to inspire me. I think in a few more years after I retire, I will cancel my newspaper subscription and walk to one of several places at least a half mile or more away to get a paper. Also within a less than 2 mile radius are my pharmacy. a couple of my favorite weekend breakfast restaurants and a Dairy Queen.

Bernice, its great to see you back !
I also lost 38 pounds last year and have put back on almost 20 now, so Im back to watching everything I eat along with the size of portions, thats how I lost last year .

Danielle, I wasnt trying to make lite of the topic in my last post, but was just in that kind of mood. I just had a girl weekend out of town and it takes a while to come back down to earth :P
After seeing the photos from the 2 nights I was not happy with how fat my face looks again . Even at my lowest weight I could not pass, but to me ,if Im happy with my look then im just more comfortable in general.

Jadeanne, I walk a lot everyday also, and try to walk a mile with my wife 3 evenings a week. I also work 2 jobs and usualy put in 12 or 14 hours a day , so my problem is my food intake, oh yea,, beer is my worst enemy #-o

Hi,

Well let me join the welcome back Bernice bandwagon. :)
*-*
I lost 25 lbs last year. I put back on 15, but have lost 8 of that again. For me it's my diet. I almost refuse to go to a gym because I know I won't continue to go. :( So I decided to watch my food intake.

The hardest part for me to get over was the weight gained on the holidays. It's hard to get that off. The holidays are what killed me this year. 10 of the 15 lbs came back then. :(

Cindy, maybe I'm missing something, but I think you are pretty and you can pass.

Danielle those pictures were excellent! You're one very awesome dresser!!! :)
Jadeanne. (--)

It's great to not only have CD support here, but to find support for losing weight too. :)

But you know,,, thats not stopping me from enjoying nights out with the girls, where I feel at ease and just have fun as Cindy.
The big test for me is next month when I finaly take my Cindy shopping trip to our new Walmart, I may not even buy anything, but hope to just be myself and browse all the things I usualy look at in drab.

Cindy, I don't mean to "Pile-on", but it looks to me like nobody else thinks you would have any trouble passing either. I've told you this before. You're a ten. It isn't your camera. We have the exact same camera, remember? So admit you are one of the lucky ones, and enjoy it! You may blush now, if you wish.

Wow, I think I just used a football term. Icky pooh. Gotta go wash my mouth out with soap.
