I love going into Payless! One of the SA's is always so friendly and never even bats an eye when some guy (me, LOL!) comes in and buys women's flats, heels and boots! Love that they have my size, love the prices! The only thing about being here in Canada though is that they do not offer online shopping. Oh well, its always fun to go in and browse! :)

I Love payless shoes, I have been buying there for years. Although I have bought a few pair that didn't live up to my expectations , I am usually pleased with my purchases.
Actually My favorite sandals came from payless and now they are discontinued :( .
I usually buy during clearance and BOGO so that allows me to go crazy and buy several pairs at a time. I always buy online and have them shipped to the store That way I get them all at once and I don't have to wait on the deliveryman.

Interesting tidbit about Payless. In most larger cities, they have certain stores which have a better inventory of larger womens sizes. As the sales associate which stores in your area have such inventory. I have found that store in particular has roughly twice the inventory of size 11 and up as the other stores in the area.

I have never had an issues with buying womens shoes at Payless. Even when other customers were in the store and on the isle I was looking at (womens 11W or 12)

Granted, their shoes are not built to last long, but the inexpensive price makes the purchase worthwhile. I will usually buy a couple of pair of womens Champions for work and knocking around. Never any problem at work or in public either.

The first pair of shoes I ever bought came from Payless. I ordered them online and they arrived very quickly. I signed up for offers years ago and get 20% coupons weekly in my email. While I do have a store nearby it is also very close to my work and I haven't had the guts to shop near there for any women's clothes.

I went to Payless today.
At first there was an older gentleman looking at men's shoes. So I waited for him to be done then I started looking.
I pulled out a pair of high heels that I liked and I was sitting on the little bench putting them on. The sales lady came up and asked if I needed any help or had any questions to ask her.
So I looked around a bit tried on a few pairs and was about to leave when she called to me and asked what I was looking for and maybe she can find it for me. I told her a pair of basic black high heels and my size. She found a pair I liked and had me try them on. It was awesome.

The credit card system went down as I tried to pay so we made small talk about "normal things" until it came back up. As I was leaving I thanked her for being sensitive to me and all her help.

Unfortunately Payless Shoes closed down in the last couple of months throughout Australia, and it seems that is becoming a world-wide thing.
Look for a bargain if they are having a closing down sale.

It's called "The Retail Ice Age" as people are using online shopping over going to a brick and morter store there will be huge losses in employment in retail and stores without a strong online business will be in trouble. I see more store closings, but Payless does sell online so ... I do not know enough about this story to say yet if they may survive online?

It is scary....like one of those futuristic SiFi horror stories where the future becomes some scary place. Everything online, we bank on line, buy online, talk and communicate online find our directions online...we are becoming a wired world...and robots will soon be taking jobs, self driving cars...will planes and trains be next and you wonder....what will be left?

I suppose humans need food...robotics could handle that, we need our personal services hair and nails, hospitals gee will doctors and nurses be robots!?

Well...Brave New World....

Bit of a morbid outlook Anne. I used to work for the Mouse and had lunch with a couple of friends still working there last weekend. I asked how it was going and of course they cried about the cuts from corporate because other divisions doing poorly. Then one of them said she had sat in on a meeting a few weeks back where they were talking about the more easily and cheaply available and the potential on the parks which are still a huge revenue and profit generators. Seems like the suits feel this could potentially harm them. I had to disagree because virtual reality will never replace the "in the park" experience. There is no wind in your face, the unsolicited screams of the other riders, the multi stimulants of the attraction.

IMO the recent failures in the retail industry is not as much due to online shopping, but to shifting priorities and demographics. Gen X and Y have different priorities than their parents had. They are more interested in travel, entertainment, and life experiences. Their parents were more interested in home furnishings and accessories, clothing, and bigger and better cars. Add to that the Baby Boomers are aging and retiring from the workforce and their priorities are shifting. No longer they do have or need closets full of clothes, bigger houses, fancy furnishings, etc. but now they want to travel, play golf, and be with their grandchildren. The need for a Macy's or Penney's or whatever on every corner is not there anymore.

Speaking of closets of clothes the shift to corporate casual has greatly affected the retail industry. No longer does a man need a dozen suits and dress shirts and ties. Just a few pairs of khakis and dozen shirts and he is set for a year. With women in the workplace gone is the need for dresses, skirted suits, etc. They can do just as well as the male with a limited wardrobe. Even the no hose rage sweeping the country has an effect. No longer does a woman need a drawer full of pantyhose knowing she will ruin a couple pair a week. Think of all these sales gone and you can see why the industry is shrinking.

There is and always be a need for the brick and mortar store. I am not one to order clothes or shoes online as I want to try them on, see how they look, how they feel and I believe many still do. I have ordered online from a retailer if they don't have my size or the color I want however until sizes are truly uniform there will be a need for the physical store. Also think of the grocery store. Sure ordering canned goods or paper products online is not a bad idea if the prices are right when you factor in shipping but what about perishables? Do you want someone just grabbing a couple of oranges or tomatoes out of a bin without looking at them, dropping them in a box and sending via UPS to you? What about meat? Dairy products? These are somethings IMHO Amazon will never be able to compete with brick and mortar.

The retail industry has to reinvent itself and size for the market and start thinking like a consumer rather than a retailer. Until they do the bankruptcies and store closing lists will continue to grow.

Yes Anne we have invited Big Brother into our homes and we pay for the services that he could use to watch us. It's amazing, but we all accept that risk in order to have easier lives in a lot of ways.

The SA have been very nice and helpful. Just tell them its for you and they will be very helpfull
I've had the same experience with Payless. I shop at two stores, both managed and staffed by the same group of people who simply rotate between them. All six of the sale ladies know me and let me try anything on I want. I'm just one of the girls.....

Hi Karen Ski! Yeah...bit morbid I suppose...It is something to guard against vs longing for an idealized memory of or wanting things to always stay the same forever. The only constant is change and though I am ...gee...will be 61! on Thursday...gaw...please! NO!!!!!! Oh well I do take very good care of the only body I will ever have and am fit and healthy even so life is a roll of the dice we may minimize the risk of health problems but they are still there and if they come all we can say is that..."well I did the best I could for myself!"

Yeah, very intelligent post on your part I do enjoy those kinds of posts. Online I believe is mainly conveinence...I relieve my shyness by purchasing feminine things online a lot! Shoes, Jewelry, clothing, lingerie...but also for specific things I want that may or may not be found in the local area without spending a whole day and lots of gasoline running all over town without success vs a few mouse clicks and it is on it's way. Right again...personal services, hair dressers, nail parlors, restaurants, entertainment, and many things to serve human needs, wants and desires will always be there...have to be who wants a virtual reality heircut or latte!? And look at any Walmart or neighborhood market those lots are always crowded because the average person just insists of going somewhere to get whatever they want. Yeah and I agree...Blue Apron, Amazon...I suppose in large metropolitan areas food delivery may work??...but not in the heartland. Yeah, agree brick and mortar will always be there people do want to try things on, or pick things up...people do like to get out and to shop and will patronize but the environment is tougher today. Should embrace change, technology..etc and stop being so fataliztic. It does challenge my brain and keep me young.
