IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN THE WORLD, IT WOULD BE?
Answer:
To eliminate prejudice. This irrational intolerance of people who are "different", whether it be by race, creed, color or a host of other preconceived ideals is the cancer that eats away at our society brought on by ignorance. There is no magic cure, just the desire to erode that ignorance through educating ourselves to accept and respect others for who they are and not what they are.

Wow, less than 24 hours ago I took a HUGE stand against hatred in another forum (having nothing to do with TG) because IMO a thread about homosexuality deterioated into a hate fest. I was about as popular as Michael Moore at a NRA convention. But you know what, it didn't matter. I took a stand and it felt good.
Prejudice is born of a desire to have the world be more to our own liking. I would banish the desire to change the world. Prejudice would then vanish on its own.
Both George Bush and Michael Moore want to make the world a better place and they both strive to change it by whatever means at their disposal. Their aim is identical yet each is prejudiced toward the other's stance. Why? Because they each want to change the other's stance. Conflict ensues.
Just be.
And let be.
Naïve? Yes. Idealistic? For sure. Utopian? You bet. Impossible? Only if we think it is.
Sounds so simple, just eliminate prejudice. But? Becareful what you wish for. Prejudice is hard to define. We have lots of prejudices from our favorite color to what we like to eat, to what movie we like or don't like. Indeed our prejudice is a great part of who we are. You only have to look at how each of us dress to see prejudice in action.
So you say, "That is not what we meant Elizabeth, we meant bad prejudice" But again, who gets to decide what bad prejudices are? Is it the same people who rate movies? Is it whoever it is that decides what is politically correct? I don't think many US citizens would have a problem being called American, however due to current political realities around the world, it is hard to imagine there are not places where calling someone american would be a great offense.
So that leads me to the one thing that I think history records mankind has fought the most over, and that is religion. So? if I could change one thing, I would change it so there was one religion that included all the current religions as subparts of the religion, but required all members to accept the different religions as all part of the same thing.
This is important to me because I beleive that the worst prejudices and injustices are caused by differences in religious beleifs. It would even be a religion that included all the non beleivers also. The goal of this religion would be loving one another as human beings.
I beleive this one change would be more profound than any other thing you could do.
Whatever you accomplish in life is a manifestation not so much of what you do, as of what you believe deeply within yourself that you deserve. - Les Brown
I agree with all of the above. There is no simple answer. I feel that if more people would follow the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" The world would be a much better place. Alas, even that is complicated, and yet it sounds so simple. Ahzz and myself are trying to change the world for the better, one person at a time, with understanding, acceptance, respect, and love.

"Love is unconditional acceptance. That quality is also our essential nature, who we really are."
--Peter Shepherd
If it ever came to pass that the power of love displaced the love of power then the world would begin to grow into a better place, but I can't see it ever happening.
Kind Regards.
Sally.
Watch nature, because it’s our greatest teacher, it moves and flows and moves on again. We can never be free until we disengage, so allow life to flow as you find it. The way it is, is the way it is.
erm... how about awareness. People aware of themselves, the effect they have on others, maybe it would give people a desire for self-improvement and that would surely have a knock-on effect.
~D~ goes for prejudice of all types, throughout the world.

It's ok that we take things seriously, but wouldn't the world be better place if people didn't tend to take things too seriously?

The best defence we have is " dont take OURSELVES so seriously " ,
one thing that seems to work well on this side of our narrow minded planet is a person who can laugh and joke about themselves.
RACISM - a local actor made a comedy show picking fun at his own race , in the show he was proud to be known by a term that is classified racially unexceptable in this country .
The actor turned the tables and it became cool to be a " ^#* " the actor is now an icon.
CDing - 6ft 7in comical footballer Ryan has just left the big brother house , during his time in the house he put on a skirt many times .
We all are well aware that ryan is hetrosexual and he laughs off questions about his occasional change of cloths , I have not seen any intollerance against Ryan at all.
I would wish to increase the tolerance levels in this world for every faction: Race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, social/economic status... you name it!
That the reason I ever had to become apart of it had never been there, because IMO these things which we would like to change will allways be apart of this world. Yet they bring so much pain.
