The internet with it's real-time communcation and borderless aspect is a great cauldron with which humanity has begun to really cook new ideas in.
Yes, we are in the information age. Look at the proliferation of patents and other forms of intelectual property. The global free rtade initiative is the biggest hallmark that we are indeed there. It's all about movign manufacturing to the lowest cost centers in the world and the complete protection of anything "information" based.
Funy thing is, american has always been behind the ball as compared to other countries in every major advance that has happened in the last 150 years. We were behind in motorization, atomic science, communications technology, and now we are falling behind on the Internet as well. Why? I believe it is because Americans have taken a purely reactionary stance to the world. We seek to protect and hoard that which we see as the greatest technology at that point in time. We have become a nation that is based ont he exploitation of others. 8-(
I know this is a bit of a diversion, but it's something that Jassmine and I concluded the other night after watching some stuff on discovery, history channel, and TLC. The politicians and multinationals talk about imagination and knowlege talent as being our key values as compared tot he rest of the world. Sorry, it isn't really true anymore. We have forced the rest of the world to inovate in order to survive our tyrrany of the last 50 years. As a result, they are more geared to out perform us in these areas.
What I forsee is that in another 50 years, everything will be outsourced. America will be a dying economy because we will have let everythign that we have walk out the door and into the rest of the world. I know some here will argue that the rest of the world deserves it as much as we do, but here I must fall back to the idea that in order to take care of others, you must first take care of yourself. It's a giant chess game now. And we are heading for checkmate because we can't even feed, house, and medically care for our own. We are more interested in the individual's wealth and prosperity than the communities.
ok, sorry for the rant, it's over.
