New dresses
Did I luck out or what!?? The Discovery Shop was having a 50% off Sale today. (American Cancer Society outlet) I had gone in earlier this week to see if they had anyting I might be interested in, but not really much. I went back today and it was "war". Packed solid, so I limited my self to the jewelery and found a great belt for a pair of slacks I have. Actually it is a gold chain, but works perfectly. So off to Goodwill and there in the back, two, count 'em two almost side by side, "dressy' dresses, not gowns but the next best thing. A light baby blue one and a mauve/peach. I grab them then stood around until there was a vacant dressing room and in I went. UNBELIEVEABLE!!! THEY BOTH FIT!!!! Now they both have zippers up the back so I will simply reach out of my hotel room at the SCC and grab the first person walking by and, " Please, zip me up?!" that just sounds sooooo sexy! Oh Oh Oh in the "discount bin, I found a pair of Haynes Sheer pantyhose, ready for this, blue, that matches my dress
of course they were brand new still in the package!!!
With all the crap I am about to get into here at home I deserve it!!!!
"When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!!!!!"
Love ya,

Virginia,
Congrats on a great shopping trip!
On our last trip to AMVETS, my wife found a book and I found a couple of dresses. She took them through the checkout and they gave her a senior discount so they were under $5 each (we're in our early 50's but my wife doesn't wear any makeup, and I'm always in male mode outside of the house, bald on top with a slightly graying fringe and we sometimes get senior prices without asking).
You are braver than I in using the dressing room. My wife is excellent in holding an item up to herself and guessing the fit - she's only been wrong once or twice.
My personal preference in formal or dressy outfits is for higher necklines and at least short sleeves. I only have a couple of strapless bustiers (white satin and red satin/black lace trim). What is your preference in elegant dress?

Hi Jadeanne,
I have to go for long sleeves, regardless. As a powerlifter, my arms and chest can be a give away if not properly covered. I do shave my chest which allows for scoop neck dresses and blouses. I am just about to the point of starting to shave my arms as well, but with fall and winter coming I may wait, just can't decide. I know that my wardrobe for SCC in Atlanta is virtually all long sleeve. Like other girls , I have decided to just take as much as I can carry and deal with the selection of what to wear when I get there. One girl told me she changed two to three times a day as did a lot of the other girls. I have not been able to find a formal gown that I like yet but I will keep looking up to the time I leave for SCC. The two dresses I got today are as I said very dressy and should do OK at the formal dinner Saturday. I have not had a chance to model either of them to decide which one I will end up wearing, but it is so much fun. Now I have to worry about how to get the zipper up and down by myself.
Love,
Virginia

Hi Sis.
Once you have the Dress on reach behind you and zip it up as far as you can, then reach over your shoulder, and grab a hold of the top of the dress at the back, and pull it up.(inching it up) You should be able to get it up high enough that you can reach the tab of the zipper. then with one hand hold the dress by the zipper in the upper part of your lower back while pulling the zipper closed with the hand that has a hold of the tab on the zipper that is over your shoulder. Works for me and with a little practice is not hard to do. Once you have it zipped up then simply pull the dress back down into place.
Happy Dressing love.

Thanks Sis,
You don't know who your dealing with here
As a powerlifter and now a powerlifter with a bad shoulder, I'm lucky I can feed myself! Reaching anywhere behind my back would probalbly take years of yoga. I have trouble even scraching my butt. If I don't get better by the SCC in Atlanta, I am not the least bit embarrased to asks for help in zipping up my dress. Seriously, I will try to get the zipper up and I have an idea for a stick with a hook on it to help - we'll see!
Love ya.

Virginia, Your shoppin' trip sound devine, I like it when the dress fits and still looks good, and the bonus is cheap.. One thing I have tried, and works well, to get dress with a back zip on by myself . I use a coat hanger that is easy to bend. I straighten the corners so that I have a handle to pull on , and the hook goes into the zipper end. You still have to hold down on the dress. if you can't reach the dress with your other hand, clip a clipper (skirt hanger) hanger on your hem of your skirt and hook the hanger (upside down ) onto to the bottom of a chair seat and tug firm but slow. Hope you have a wonderful time at the SSC. I 'll be thinking ofyou in the blue dress. ........... Kristen

Thats awsome luck finding 2 nice dresses like that ! I have been going to the Goodwill near here almost every Tuesday (hallf price day) and still no luck finding anything that fits. Yesterday I tried another consignment shop and they had 1 formal dress that may have fit, but I didnt like the look.
So SCC will be here soon and sure hope to find something before long ! I just cant pay 200.00 for a new gown. I did try on a green dress from my closet last night to make sure it still fits, so thats my back up plan :-)
Hugs

Hey Cindy, yeah, cheap the two dresses cost me all of $7.00 beleive it or not. Kind of embarrassing, but ........... I will not be able to try them on "dressed" until next week. My fitting at Goodwill was without benefit of hose, slip, bra, etc. so we will see. I was just reminded that I was up late last night and had put in a bid for a black gown with a cute waist coat on EBay. I am still the high bidder and bidding higher than I really wanted, but I asked the seller some questions and she replied and it seems like it will fit nicely, if I get it. It will probably become my "little black dress!"
And the excitement builds!

Hi girls,
The zipper thing reminds me of the old Rhoda show. After she finally married Joe, she asked him to zip up her dress. He said "how did you do it when you were single?". She replied "when you're single you have longer arms". I don't know why that popped into my mind, but I always thought that was funny.
Love always,
Elizabeth
