Truckin in NYC!? YUCK

I dont wanna offend anyone and I hope I dont.

Have any of you ever driven a truck (18wheeler) In New York?
Well on Wed. I was once again reminded why I HATE Long Island!

A 13'6" truck and 12'2" underpasses!! Which meant hving to drive
right through the middle of Brooklyn/Queens! What a pain in my back!
Litterally! We get all over the place in this truckin life, But I would much
rather drive in the winter in 6feet of snow! At least with snow, ya kinda
know what to expect. Okay I said my piece, I feel better now.

Except to say that now my wife Sue, really thinks I am crazy to do this
for a livin. But after 26 yrs, what else am I gonna do?

It sounds like you might have made a wrong turn, did you stay on the BQE or did you go to the beltway. When I was in NY many truckers went to the beltway by mistake and had their trucks smashed by the low bridge. I don't know if this happened to you, but NY roads are lousey.

try getting a gig at teamster's outfit and drive local and be home everynight (or every other night). 26 years ought to get you in.

Any trucker that "parks" his rig under a low bridge needs to take it as their cue to get out of the business.

I've never sat in a truck let along drove one, but they are very cool to look at. And I've always wanted to drive down a road in a truck and blow that horn

Connie, my son drove over the road for a long time and got to a point he refused to go to N.Y. Must be alfull driving condition for an outsider.

Been there done that with a oversized and overweight load. I lost 12 chains and binders to people getting on the back of the rig while I was driving had a police excore also. It took 12 hours to go 40 miles in and 2 hours to come out. You take about not giving an inch even with police it was something I would never want to do again. It was not to long after that, that I decided on another living. I am going to do it again when i retire but never in nyc. Gee.

I think truckers are awesome.

I drove a lot during my 20s and I gained a respect for truckers that I never had. I am thankful of what you do to transport goods to businesses and the long hard hours you put in. I think you all are very under appreciated.

I also lived in LI and I totally understand the chaos you had to go through. YUCK!!!

Regardless, I wanted to say THANK YOU!!!

I'm glad you got home safe and sound, but am terribly sorry you had such a yucky time of it.

Does driving a 30' long wheat hauler dump truck in kanses 2 weeks a year qualify e as a truck driver?

If it does, it's gonna ruin my image as a CDing geek!!!!

I know driving Ol' Grunt at the farm doesn't qualify me as anything other than crazy... talk about a good way to get a sore backside... drive a 24 ton 14' tall tractor across rough fields at ~15mph. oof! *wonders if he has pics of the size of the beast handy...*

ahha found one from johndeeres site. This shoudl give you an idea of the tractor size! 5FOOT INSIDE rim diameter on the bigest tires.

side note, anyone else here driven other large equipment in their lifetime as work? (eg, not just once for digging a foxhole..

If it has a clutch and at least 8 speeds (hi/lo range) then you QUALIFY!

Bonus points if you don't have power steering.

Extra bonus points if the hi/lo range shifter is a stick on the floor.

Triple bonus if you had to regularly climb hills pulling 80,000 lbs with a 280 HP engine.

Does this qualify as large?:

I estimate 250,000 miles logged w/triples 105,500 lbs (about the same w/ doubles), but never drove out of state or long haul

trucking must be a blast...getting out there and seeing the big country. I love to travel, so something like that appeals to me big time. I have looked into getting my truckin licence, but the cost of the lessons is too high for me.

I was for a year and have done it a few times since then for fun for an uncle of mine. I intend on doing it again when I retire. Gee.
