Cool Gelinda! :)

Why do you want to do that? Is it a childhood dream or just something that you have always had? Is it something that you one day just said, "Hey!?! I want to drive a rig!" I know.. I ask to many questions. !!tongue!!

BTW, It's totally AWESOME to see you posting again. :)

Beauty: I love the open road. I love to drive the rigs also. It is a great way to see the country and still make money. I can do it at my pace and time. I am hopeing to change my wife's thinking into her getting her CDL also so that we can double team the road. Since de-regulation a few years ago then is not the money in trucking that their was before the change. If it was not for De-rugulation I would most likely be doing it now, since my kids are old enough to take care of themselves if they would that is. But it is hard to make money on the road now as an independant. Gee.

Hi again,

:( That's really sad. :( I didn't know that had happened.

I hope you get to get back on the road when you retire. I can totally relate with the great feeling of being on the road. I love the feeling. Maybe love doesn't cover it well enough. :)

Thanks for the education this morning. I didn't know about de-regulation in the trucking industry.

It could be worse. You could LIVE here and have to contend with these roads EVERY DAY. :?

I spent a summer (ok just a couple weekends as I was a temp) as a ride along to help the driver unload the truck. I thought it was great or at the least gave me a perspective I have never had before. When I was little I thought I would wanted to be a long haul driver with a twist. My trailer would be a traveling vet clinic of sort. That sort of died out but still I have a lot of respect for those drivers. It also gave me story ideas to write about in the future. Out west here we have less problems with low bridges except in some place in the city I have seen several times a truck trail get stuck under a train bridge usually do the fact that one side of the short tunnel is lower than than the other I believe. Luckily here it does not happen that often and when it does there are two other lanes than people can use to go by the driver.

I love to travel, but a tractor trailer is not exactly my first choice.

Even though, the blame is entirely the driver's to make sure his truck can fit in and out before even attempting such a move. When in doubt, DON'T! 8) The reason I'm a stickler for safety is because it is clear to us that if a truck driver cannot handle his/her rig with a stationary object (a bridge), then how can he be trusted to deal with moving objects (YOUR CAR containing YOUR FAMILY) on the highway?

On a related topic . . . its true, look in any major newspaper on the weekend -- hundreds of trucking jobs available -- many paying $50,000 plus with no worry of layoffs. Unfortunately, with the DMV rule changes, one has to go to trucking school. Then the first 2 years out, you'll almost have to drive long haul. After 2 years, and a CLEAN driving record (no tickets and accidents during those 2 years) you'll be able to land a highpaying local or regional gig.

Driving long haul isn't for everybody -- I know I couldn't do it, but if you can get past the first 2 years accident free, you'll be able to pick your employer.

Good luck!

Here here!

Out here on Long Island, trucks can only use the Interstare expressways and are not allowed to use the parkways - the parkways have signs at the enterance that say NO COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC. I'll never forget the time some truckdriver decided to ignore this rule, and sure wnough could not fit the truck under the low bridge. Needless to say he was stuck, and caused such a backup that it took me 45 min to travel what normally should have taken about 3. :?
