They were popular in the late 1980's. I think Def Leppard made them popular (by using emory cloth on the legs before the wash).

Can we all agree that the huge hair should never, ever come back? I also thought people had been shocked.

Ripped jeans started out as an 80s thing, but they come back into fashion every so many years. All of my jeans were ripped [John Houseman]the old-fashioned way[/John Houseman].

drainpipe jeans are those really skintight ones that were cool in the 80's.. though I never stopped wearing them!! (even if I get told my legs are skinny enough as it is..)

The 80's styles are coming back, I didn't know they left.
As far as ripped jeans go it's sort of like Jaye said they go and come back again frequently. I remember hippies in ripped jeans. In the early eighties I would go out with ripped blue jeans, I mean they were ripped everywhere ang I would wear black tights or black leggings underneath, so you'd see the black through the holes of the blue jeans. This was my favorite look for daytime shopping.
