Reading test anyone?

Post by Carolynn »

This is very unusual, but if you are an English speaker, it does seem to work. Says something for how our brains are wired for reading, huh?

Don't delete this because it looks weird. Believe it or not you can read it.

If your deslexix (sp?) (like me) it just takes a little longer. A couple of times I hade to sound out the word for a second in order to understand it. But if I can read it any one can. I do think that there is a draw back all the words have to be readly avaible. Scientific words or words that are in general hard to sound out may be harder to do this with.

That's super cool :) I am still slightly dyslexic too (Thank the lord of the spell checkers :) ) but that cool :)

When at school I was in the special class cs of my spelling, and I remember we had to write what we wanted to achieve, and I wrote "I want to improve my spaelling" or something like that, sis took the pee out of me for ages for that :)

:P

What I really wonder, though, is whether or not the opposite is true (that is, can you keep a word unchanged, except for interchanging its first and last letters, and still understand what's written?).

Nope, I guess not!

HI CJ!!! :)

I could read your backwards words almost as easily as the other way, amazingly enough, though like Sophie, the backward unchanged reqired a bit of a second look. By then the context had helped, and I sorta wonder if the gist of the sentence from the words before don't help sort out the words following?

Anyway, amusing, huh! :)

Hi all,

Gals,

I'll tell you anyway! :P It didn't take me all that long (two or three minutes at most). My mind is sort of bizarrely wired, when it comes to words. Although I'm not (and have never been) dyslexic, I do have very strong schizoid personality traits (not schizophrenic--schizoid). These are personality traits, not a disorder; there's a big difference. This is also a self-diagnosis, by the way. Anyway, some of those traits are: rich imagination; solitary leisure and hobbies; some occasional difficulty in relating to others emotionally; discomfort in social situations; and, especially in my case, a fetish for wordplay. I have this habit that my friends find sometimes amusing, sometimes irritating: I spontaneously hear and read words backwards, whether they be names or titles or what have you. I can't help myself. I see a word, even for the very first time, and my brain registers it in all kinds of directions--forward, backward, and rearranged. Within a few seconds, anagrams of a given word will start popping up in my head unbidden. I saw a name on the CDDF a couple of days ago that read, "Enelrad" and I immediately saw "Enelrad," "Darlene," (not necessarily our own Darlene, I think), and "Real End." I annoy myself sometimes! I'm not too hard on myself, though. The way I see it, this personality trait triples my vocabulary. :P

Love,
CJ

I don't suppose it's very common, and I guess context pretty much sorts things out, but what of ambiguities like dart and drat? I know it's kind of a bad example (what ambiguity?), but I'm sure there are other, less trivial instances. :-k

Hi CJ,

Thanks for explaining how your mind works, I wondered about the kind of mind that would pick something like that up. I would never had recognized that had it not being pointed out. :)
