FIRES

A lawer at my firm had a kitchen fire. Cause was a Black&Decker can opener that mounted under the cabinet.

I told him we almost had one with the B&D under the cabinet toaster oven. Our dog smelled it getting hot and woke my son, he unplugged it, and after it cooled unmounted it at set it outside.

The lawyer told me that he's learned of a few other B&D appliances that have caused fires.

So, If you have one, unplug it when not in use.

Thanks for the tip, hon! I'm glad no one in your colleague's family was hurt.

Plus I'm glad I have not used any Black & Decker appliances since the 1980s. In fact I never even owned a Dustbuster! My regular vacuum had the detachable hose & did the job just fine.

B&D should stick with saws!

But actually, we don't know for sure if ALL B&D products are defective, or even just B&D can openers. It could have been just that one, OR some other consumer damage to the device.

Besides, outlets near the sink should have GFIs (its in the building code) that should prevent these things from occuring. (any licensed electricans in the house to educate us further?)

I'm an electrical engineer. GFIs (ground fault interrupts) are used where there's a chance of coming into contact with water like near the sinks such as the bathroom or kitchen. They don't help when internal components overheat, and many times the circuit breakers don't trip because there isn't a short in the circuit.

Hi Donna, and thanks for the info. I have one of the B&D under counter can openers, but never use it. It only opens the can part way around, then it drops the can on the counter. What a mess. It's been destined for the trash for a while now, that date just got made. Tomorrow. Also have a B&D timer coffee maker. Better check Consumer Reports on that one.
