How do you start up a web page?

Hi,

I am not technically minded when it comes to computers. I use a computer like I drive a car. Start it, drive it and park it.
How it does it I just dont know!

I am using broadband to surf the internet, and as part of my deal with the ISP I have a web space. But I dont know how to use it. It says I need to upload an index page using an FTP Client.

Well that instruction may as well be written in Russian because each FTP Client I have looked at has the same result. I puzzle over it for a while. get frustrated, get really mad, then delete it!

Can anybody help me?

Does your ISP have a web page designed to allow you to manageyour site files via a web browser?

The main page that they are refering to is "index.html". It's a text file that the server looks for if the page requested ends in "/"

Hi Ahzz,

Unlike some web based systems my ISP does not have online software.

They recommend use of one of the following programs to upload web pages. Terrapin, Cute, Fetch and Microsoft Webpage Wizard.

I dont have any of those but I do have Microsoft Frontpage.

Hi Kerri,

This is difficult to answer in detail without knowing more - for example your ISP, how much you know about websites and how they are built, what FTP client you are trying to use.

Basically, to put your own site on the web you need -

1. A "website" you have created on your own pc. (Not sure if you have this)
2. Webspace of your own to upload your "website" to. (You have this, but do you know the address you need to upload to?)
3. A means of getting the "website" from your pc onto your webspace. (Sounds like you have the means - FTP client - but not the know-how)

I'd be happy to give you more detailed help. Please keep in mind that anyone who helps you with your website does not need to know -

Your (ISP or any other) user name.
Your (ISP or any other) password.

As you are on broadband I hope your firewall and anti-virus software is up to date? If not I'd be happy to help you with those too (ZoneAlarm, AVG are free - and Google is your friend).

My ISP is Pipex.
I have no understanding of websites and how they are constructed.

I have a Firewall, currently I am using the built in Win XP Firewall. I do have an account with ZoneAlarm Professional but their last update prevented me from downloading music and accessing game sites, so I disabled it.

I am using Norton AV 2004 too. In addition I scan my system regularly with Spybot SD.

1. I dont have a website. I just want to post photo's and a few stories on the web.
2. I do have webspace through my ISP.
3. I have Microsoft Frontpage 2002 in my office suite. But true I dont know how to use it.

Maybe "Idiots Guide" do a book on this?

I dont expect anybody to do the work for me. I am looking for a bit of guidance, someone to hold my hand, figuratively speaking.

kerri, consider switching (perhaps temporarly) to an ISP that is more newbie-friendly (but not AOL), like Earthlink . . . they've got easy-to-use tools to get a website site up and running quickly. Their customer service -- especially live chat -- is first rate.

I have looked on the web for Free Hosting and I am considering something like this...

Kerri,

Pipex seem to have something called "Web Page Creator" which should be a lot easier to use. Not sure but WPC may only be available to their dial-up users.

Another option would be Wanadoo - you can get a free website (with a small Wanadoo banner ad) and use their Site Builder online software. www.wanadoo.co.uk

Frontpage has quite good tutorials on how to write your web pages - F1 and click Get Started/Create a Web Page. IIRC you can save Word docs as html, might be easier if you are familiar with Word.
