No changes since my last report. My face has remained the same. With only a week till Christmas, I am please to report that all my dark hair is gone.
Yes, I still have some white hairs that come in everyday as they always have. They are nearly clear looking. So, while I can feel them at night after shaving 8 hours earlier, I can just once again take 1 minute to pass the norelco over my face and presto.. a smooth face once again.
I can live with this for now. It takes only a covergirl like makeup to make me look great for my age. I am super delighted to report that this was the best thing that I could do, inexpensively, without major surgery.
Anyone wanting good results, over a relatively short time without a great deal of swelling etc., IPL works. I have every reason to believe that this is permanent at this time. My Doctor is super pleased with my results in comparison to other patients this year. He said I was his "star example."
I have updated my "avitar" photo with a real-time, unedited current picture......
Hugs

I have always said in this thread that I would tell it like it is.
Since my last treatment, I now have hair grown back on my upper lip, around the mouth edges and on two opposing corners of my chin. The amount of hair is signifiantly less than when I first started this process in the spring of 2004. None the less, their is hair regrowth at this time after 5 treatments. I must shave it with a triple edge and cream rinse to reduce any irritation.
I will be waiting another 30 days to see what happens, then will consider another treatment over the entire face or whereever the hair appears. This runs about $275.00 with the current Doctor. I am going to see what one of the "Spa" type places charges for the same treatment. They have someone trained in the use of the equipment and a Doctor on-call for references and to make it legal for them to use the equipment. I am familiar enough with the science to make sure that what they suggest to do is right for me.
The current hair is finer than before but you still get the sand-paper sound when shaving. I believe that it is fair to say that 85% of my hair is now gone. The lip/mouth area is always the most difficult do to. Sensitivity in that area when applying the IPL energy is high. Perhaps, LASER would be better for this next treatment as it targets the region better with a central beam of light rather than the IPL method that is more like dispersed light found in a flashlight etc. While the IPL light is concentrated by placing the element on your face, it is still more dispersed than a LASER unit.

I started this thread last May 11, 2004. I was about to go for my first of 4 full face treatments with the "Pulsed-LIght" Method of hair removal. Today, March 21,2005, I can say that the hair is predominantly gone where the maximum amount of energy was applied. No neck hair or hair on the side of my face.
I do get some right on the jawline, around the mouth and the upperlip.
I am going to make another appointment to have the 5th major treatment done in the next 45 days. I am confident that this treatment will pretty much finish off any dark hairs that remain.
Of course, I still have the light blonde or white hairs to contend with but they are pretty much sparse so I can get by without shaving them for 48 hours or so. I will never be smooth as a baby's bottom unless I go for electrolosys treatments. That is not in the plans for now.
When I shave anymore, I look pretty clean with little if any reference to the previous beard hair. Nothing short of amazing. My Doctor said that I was one of the best results for 2004.
So if anyone is considering this, go for it! You can always go for the more intense "LASER" treatment for the stubborn hairs later. If you are confused, just look up pulsed-light technology in your favorite search engine. It is being used to resurface the skin and remove dark pigment spots caused by excessive exposure to the sun. Also, it stimulates, not grows collagen cells. So it can help remove tiny fine lines by stimulating the collagen cells to fill in the fine lines better.
I am 56 and have not seen any "fine lines" in some time,
.

I finished my 5th IPL treatment about 19 days ago. Tuesday May 17th I had a full neck and face exposure. The treatment nurse first did a full pass at a setting of 5 and then a setting of 4.
What does that mean? I believe that there only 7 settings to my knowledge on this equipment model. 5 is pretty strong then. Think of how hot a black car gets in the noon day sun. Then how much warmer a white car is. You cannot touch the black car while the white car is hot to the touch you can sustain your hand there for a few seconds at minimum.
Physics does not change ladies. A black hair absorbs the most light (energy) and a white hair the least. So I still have white hairs here and there every day. But, with having only a few I can use my Norelco shaver lightly for about 1 minute and come away baby face smooth for the day.
No shadow, no dark lines along the jaw or upper/lower lip etc. It does look a little strange at first. At my age, I look like I am 10 years old. On the other hand, by using the proper make-up combination even in [male] mode, it looks really good I have been told by other [men] and [women-gg].
My dentist for one was very impressed and he is about my age, around 57 or so. He as I are very technical people and so we have something in common to talk about during a routine checkup. The best compliment came from a [male] client. He is 5 years younger than I. He closed his office door and said that I looked so much younger than he, he wanted to know if I would tell him what I am doing.
I did to a certain extent tell him about IPL and that I was tired of shaving and getting cut. He agreed on that issue. So, to make it short, people so far that know me are impressed by the final results.
My doctor believes that I may need a touch-up this Fall but for the most part this technology has done all that it can or needs to do. I always expected the white hairs at my age. So if you are in your 20's, 30's or 40's, now is the time to do this. The probability of white hairs obviously increases with age.
I will send a final photo to Beauty and ask her to include it in this thread. You can be your own judge. For me, bar none, this was the best thing to do and everyone in the family around me has adjusted to the different look for the most part. I will address that in my personal thread [Revelations] today.
About the photo: In the lower right hand corner there is a dark area that was caused by the light falling off and a shadow forming, not hair. I am as clean as my upper lip all over.

Hi Danielle,
I'll post it the picture for sure on my site when you're ready to send it.
Congrats on the IPL. I can relate to the shaving part you're talking about. I also believe you're right on the money (not that you don't know that) about if you're a wee bit younger you're most likely not shaving anymore and you're seeing the IPL person just for touch ups.
One of the reasons I decided at 36 to get the laser treatments was because of what you just said. I was like, "Grey hair is going to start growing and then I'll need electrolysis." So I ran towards the treatment after I found the right person.
What I really wanted to say I understood too was the shaving, sorry I got kind of taken away there. I can't talk about this stuff enough. It's like talking to CJ, when do I stop?
When I was at about the 8 month mark I remember the times I would shave (like you with an electric razor) and it would take almost no time at all and the feeling was sooo smooth. I have that feeling all the time now thankfully, but what I'm trying to tell you I believe you it's as smooth as you say, it's as quick as you say and it looks as long as you said it does. That's more for those who are reading this wondering about the technology. Danielle already knows this.
I think you're totally our CD-F IPL pioneer and that IPL is most likely the quickest way to removal all facial hair in the shortest amount of time. Your seventh treatment sounds like my 12th treatment. The only way I see laser staying more popular is price.
I finally found the check I wrote for my treatments and it was 1.2k that's for treatments since July 2003. I could go through here and read your posts to find out how much you've paid so far, but I'm lazy so I'll just ask.
What's been the grand total for your seven treatments? Actually, if you don't mind me asking. Maybe that's a bit too personal to ask.
I'm glad you've kept this thread updated Danielle. I think it's very important. I won't be updating mine until the middle of July. That'll be my next 3 month mark.
Grand thread Danielle, just grand.

Hi Beauty:
Five (5) ( 1 touch-up) treatments = $1750.00.... First was last March 2004. Last was May 17th 2005.
I think the last photo tells the story best. People of record have gone over 6 years so far with this technology. Time will be the proof I suppose.
I could use a treatment of "COOLGLIDE" LASER, to spot hit a few rogue hairs individually, but I will wait to see if they just fall out first.
Hugs

Hey Danielle,
Thanks for the price info.
That's not too bad really. Our prices are pretty close that's good news for those who like choice.
Hey? Where's the picture?
Wait until people see it. I think a few mouths will be gaped open.
I think you'll be fine with IPL, you won't need CoolGlide, but my mouth gaped open when I read that you said that.
I'm way flattered.
Don't you just love the fall out phase?
I don't really get that anymore because the laser doesn't really fire off that much, but there was nothing better than when it fell out.

Anyhow.. where's the picture? I want everyone to see. It's just incredible.

Thought for the record I would make a short entry on my progress.
Last IPL treatment #5, was May17th. The only new growth since this last treatment has been perhaps 10 - 15 dark hairs directly located at the base of the nasal area. A little difficult to get the physical treatment head there, perhaps a pencil type laser head that would emit a fine line beam and is hand-held would be appropriate for a quick touch-up. This type of idea is not available at this time with IPL equipment that I can find among the manufacturers. That is where a full LASER device with a fine beam comes in handy.
IPL is like using a small flash lamp that one finds with a camera flash unit. It is the same lamp used in LASER equipment without the precious gem [ ruby ] etc, in place to take the light and refine it into a fine beam line. This technology takes advantage of the [gem] acting as an electron collector and compressing the energy discharge into a concentrated fine beam for effectiveness.
So, I will visit the Doctor on Tuesday June 14th for evaluation of the last treatment.
I would like to comment to those that are considering this technology or any LASER related technology. The person applying this treatment by reducing the power can insure extra treatment that costs you more money. So be sure to ask about the treatment plan. My Doctor went right to work with what he though was the maximum that my skin could take at one time. As it turned out, he was right on the mark. No burns, but I was a red lobster for about 2 hours after a double dose.
The Doctor needs to balance between effectiveness of the treatment and any posible skin damage that could happen with improper power levels for your skin type. My Doctor was interested in seeing what level I could take without any major problems so we took a reasonable and careful approach as he stepped up the power from level 3 to level 5 the first time around. I had the most hair then and things would really snap on the discharge of the lamp.
I have never gone above level 5 with level 7 the maximum. By using an Aloe cooling gel at the time of treatment, this reduces the heating effect to the surface skin. I still get "red" and stay that way about 2 hours. By also applying fresh aloe from home gown plants after the treatment and through the first 2 hours, I have no real discomfort later that evening after the redness is gone. The skin remains bumpy-like for about 3 days as the healing process takes shape.
I applied liquid makeup over the area the next few days to cover the area to see if one can do this and go to work without anyone picking up on the work being done. It worked just fine. My regular clients paid no attention or nor where there any questins about my changes. Some of these people I am on very good terms with and the women would ask about me if they saw a change.
So, with all of this in mind, I think anyone interested in this idea, should read over the thread in general for any questions that they may have. The picures and technology description is posted though-out the thread.
Hugs

My 7th treatment was completed in July. It is now September 10th. I have perhaps 10 - 20 dark hairs around the nostrils and the sides of my mouth. Not unusual as this is the most sensitive area. I am now considering LASER (CoolGlide) for the final touch up. With just a few dark hairs, (white hairs prevail) the fine point of LASER is more practical than the blanket coverage of the IPL system. Beauty has a fine entry on this LASER (Coolglide) system here at the forum.
IPL did what I needed quickly like a shot-gun approach. With all the original hair, that method proved very efficient. Total cost, $1700.00. I could have saved another $250.00 if I had blocked out some time rather than pay at each session toward the end.
It snaps like a rubber band so yes, it hurts. But, as I recorded in this thread, you live through it if you want it bad enough. So pinch yourself and go do it! There is a new IPL system that employs the use of RF-Microwave Technology with the IPL light. This system is untested for people of the [male] persuasion when it comes to facial hair. There is a claim that the RF-M, removes white hairs and blond hairs. On women, pehaps, on men, I doubt it. The amount of energy that they mention will not adequately dislodge the hair and destroy the folicle to date. There is some question about the company making such claims. They only show pictures of woman's [gg] faces.

Hi Danielle,
Good luck with your laser treatments, if you choose to do them. This has been, by far, the best thread on IPL treatments I've ever read. So I hope people read it as they will gain quite a bit of knowledge.
My eyes nearly bugged out of my head when you said they've created an IPL system for light hair. Does your laserologist use it? Are you considering it?
That sounds way, way cool!
