Page too wide - Resolved

Post by Elizabeth »

Hi Sharon,

I have noticed since you have redone the site and added the Flashchat and moved the Photo Gallery(excellent work, btw) to the logged in page that now the page is so wide I have to scroll back and forth to hit the links to view my posts, posts since last login, or unanswered posts. Also, once in a thread, I now have to scroll back and forth to see the avatars, if I want to be able to read the thread. My screen resolution is set to 800 X 600 and I use Netscape. I never had to scroll before.

So the question is, did you change to a higher screen resolution, or is this something that can be changed back to the way it used to be?

Thanks in advance.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Good morning Elizabeth and Carol Ann,

What was happening is the menu at the top has a piece of code in it that tells the browser don't wrap. This forces your browser to say, "You're going to need a scroll bar at the bottom if the user's screen resolution is to low."

So I moved the FAQ link to the second row and shortened the top row. Did that do it or is it still too wide?

Thanks for the feedback you two! :)

Hi all,

Beauty,

I noticed that, too. Your "readjustments" did make a bit of a difference, though. Thanks. :) (By the way, it's awesome work you and Sharon have done on the forum, lately! Thanks for that, too. 8)) Ideally, the forum is best viewed on a 17-inch monitor in 800x600 resolution. Anything less will require a viewer to scroll back and forth at least a little bit.

Love,
CJ

my .02 cents as a publishing "insider" (not a complaint mind you):

WIDE blocks of text by nature is difficult to read (this isn't a personal opinion, its based on scientific research! ). This is why newspaper/magazine articles are narrow. -- its more user friendly and makes for a more pleasant reading experience. ***also*** narrower text has a lower "misunderstanding" rate!

If one has a choice, narrowing the posts (by adjusting the forum margins) would make a forum (not just this one) more user-friendly and appealing. One can "speed read" through posts even if they're only halfway interested.

I'm sure many of you have faced the daunting task of having to read through a large solid block of text from a poster and chose to scroll right by it instead. Had the text been narrower, you might at least glance at it while scrolling.

I realize that there is no pleasing everyone, but a change like this would probably benefit the forum.

have a nice day.

Hi Alexandra,

The changes would take us forever and you're right in the end some would say, "I liked it better before." So we'll just leave it as it is for now. :)

I think support benefits the forum over formatting, but we'll continue to do our best to make it as readable as possible.

You have a nice day too. :)
