Hi all,
My first contact with American culture, as a teen, came through watching the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. When I was about 12 or 13 years old, I got into the habit of watching at least the first half hour of the Tonight Show with my father. I'd become increasingly curious as to what always made my father laugh so much so late in the day. One night, I asked him if I could join him in watching the show. He made me a coffee (imparting to me a love of Java that continues to this day) and had me join him down in the den for the show. It's a habit I kept for years.
The animals, the quirky guests, the comments on the weird headlines, Karnak the Magnificent, faithful yes-men Ed McMahon and Doc Severinson, the deadpan stare at the camera and, above all, the monologues (Carson's typical quick glance down at the cue cards is forever burned into my brain)... all this and more did much to shape and influence my own view of what it means to have a sense of humour.
Johnny, you made me laugh in a sometimes sorrowful world. I'll miss you. May you rest in peace (and make 'em chuckle up there, you hear?)
Love,
CJ
