Interesting replies. Thanks for participating. I took the test Donna provided a link to and I came out being Galadriel, one of the choices I wanted to include in the poll but didn't have room for.
When I was still in university, taking a degree in Religious Studies, we spent an entire term in one of my courses (Understanding Religion) looking at myth and spirituality as they can be found in popular American films coming out of Hollywood. It was a fascinating course. We took apart the mythic structure of such films as Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz, in which the "quests" of the main heroes (Luke, for harmony with the Force; Dorothy, for home) had spiritual overtones and played a pivotal role in how the stories turned out. I think that much of what we discussed back then can be applied to Frodo's journey as well (and to other characters in the LOTR films, many of whom gain wisdom and spiritual depth because of their ordeals and trials in freeing Middle-Earth from the grip of Sauron--an obvious stand-in for the Christian conception of shaitan, "the Adversary" of Hebrew myth, if there ever was one).
Going back to the poll (and online test), although I most see myself in Boromir, I certainly wouldn't mind being even just a bit like Arwen... her poise, her tenderness... and her lips. Those lips are to die for!
Love,
CJ
