Only need two minutes!

Post by Virginia »

I posted this in another area, but I know that there are those out there who feel the way I do. I would like just two minutes, that's only 120 seconds with anyone who develops and posts these viruses and/or worms on the net. I think in that very brief time I could convence them of the error of their ways, in fact if I could convence Gee to join me we could probably show them in under a minute. So if anyone has name and/or address of any of these folks, PM me and I will discuss endangered species with them, briefly!!!!

Yes I did! it is what my computer folks who sold me this thing said is a "smart" virus. It is impervious to removal by Norton and it locks out my SpyBot and MicroSoft says they show no viruses on my computer. These guys say it will cost around $100.00 to remove it. It is called Trojan Download. I don't know what it does other than my speed has slowed way down. I am not an expert on these things and I do not have anything of importance on my computer.

Virus spawn is just a frame of mind, similar to those who would put poison in painkillers or washing machines in rail road tracks. This particular combination of cowardice and malice will never go away. Thank Jah, computer worms don't (generally) kill people!

I think a sentence of tech support would help such a person to see the light. Confine the offender to a cell where his only machine was a '386SX with 2 meg's of RAM and a 30-meg drive, running Windows 3.1. Have this person handle support calls from people who think their CD drive is a cupholder (wonder why a PC won't work without electricity, etc.) for about ten years. I think this soul would be cured of his mischievous ways, though no doubt precautions would need to be taken to prevent the prisoner from contriving some means of suicide using the machine's power supply.

Virginia,

Go to http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/?siteID=1&reso ... &cid=13048

and click on the 'scan for viruses' button.

This should give you the name of the virus.

Then click on the virus' name and get removel instructions. If you have ME or XP read the instructions for those systems too for disabling System Restore.

See also the virus names at http://vil.mcafee.com/newVirus.asp

Antivirus firms Sophos, Computer Associates and Symantec all agree that the worm is spreading quickly but say is relatively simple to remove using their latest antivirus definitions.

As long as it fails intermittently and unpredictably, I say the more the merrier.

clever people who create virus and other computer intelligence mischief ought to have their own intelligence re-arranged by a surgical procedure.

For what it's worth, here's my top tips for a healthy pc -

1. Use a firewall, keep it up to date.
2. Use antivirus software, keep it up to date.
3. Use anti-spyware and anti-adware software and (you guessed it) keep 'em up to date.
4. Set Windows Update to "automatic".
5. Use a spam filter (most ISPs have one, even my Yahoo account has one).

Expensive? Well, no - you can get decent anti-everything software free. For example -

Firewall - ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm (free for personal use).
Antivirus - AVG is free for personal use, with free updates.
Anti-spyware and anti-adware - Spybot Search & Destroy (free, free updates), AdAware SE (free, free updates), Spyware Blaster (free, free updates). You can get a free 30 day trial version of Webroot Spy Sweeper which is highly recommended.

I've also used InnoculateIT antivirus (free on a PC mag cover disk), Panda Antivirus (with 6 months free updates - PC mag cover disk).

The laptop I'm using to post this is currently protected by -

A hardware firewall.
A software firewall (Norton 2005).
Norton Antivirus 2005.
Spybot Search & Destroy.
AdAware SE.
Spyware Blaster.
Windows Update set to automatic.
Using Firefox for internet browsing rather than IE.

I never open email attachments I'm not expecting, I use spam filtering, regularly check for updates for the above software ... and hide behind the sofa whenever there's an unexpected loud noise.

Installing the software and assuming you are safe is a recipe for disaster - you MUST check for updates regularly (preferably using automatic updating if the software supports it). Believing someone (or a website) that says you must disable your firewall is sheer madness.

I've just spent a day repairing / rebuilding a friend's pc where his ISP Tech Support people had told him to disable his firewall. The pc had Norton Antivirus 2003 installed (but with way out of date virus definitions) and consequently the pc was riddled with viruses, several copies of the Downloader.QY trojan and an unbelievable amount of spyware and adware.

Did I mention I am not a Geek?

PC Hell is a great website for dealing with some issues as well. It gave me instructions to get my machine running right after something got loaded on my system.
