like multi engined non-turbo radial piston aircraft -- a nightmare to maintain . . . but no jet sounds as great as a Lockheed Constellation taking off
Oh dear! And here I thought I was the only one in this forum old enough to know of such things. Yes, the sound of a Connie at takeoff power was truly inspiring. Those old engines (recips we called them) were powerful indeed, and I'm living proof that a Connie could fly (though not very well) with only one of them running.
Sorry for drifting off topic, but Alexandra pushed a button that I thought was totally inactive after all this time.

I was reading all about these trains when you came along and woke me up.
My favourite machine has got to be an Avro Vulcan, its like a huge bat in slow motion. I used to love watching the Vulcan Squadron scramble when we practiced our nuclear response thing back in the seventies.
They were good times, looking for Bears in the North Atlantic, doing depth charge runs on Red subs, but I diverse.....
I have a Hornby 00 set in the loft, I had a Triang 3-track system as a bairn. I had a train driver simulator on my PC until I accidentally deleted it. I used to love travelling on the Flying Scotsman from Aberdeen to London KingsCross every summer, the memory that stays with me is waking up at dawn and looking out across flat alien fields rimmed with Poplar trees, all covered in a dewy mist......
I also helped out at the Ham Radio club at RAF Halton too..
Oh, gee, what a great thread! I'm having fun here. I never set up my layout again after about age 14--it lived in two big TV cartons at the family home. It was an American Flyer set-up that covered about 70 sq.ft. of plywood.
But in the real world, I loved the B&O and the Pennsylvania railroads. I have only one memory of seeing a steam engine, and that is REAL hazy.
I did get to ride the Empire Builder, as a 17 year old, and remember spending the last night playing cards with three adults in the club car. Outside, South Dakota and Minnesota were going by.
I think there's a connection between trains and CDing, that extends to more than just my little world. It is unfortunate that crossdressing is not something that we can collect statistics on, so I'll not know for sure one way or another.

Maybe on the next railfan tour I should ask everyone if they dress in womens clothing , I can tally up all the red faced denials as a "yes".
Those who punch me to the ground I will take as a "NO"!
