Erin, Isn't it just a kick. Even just driving around town makes it so exciting just to stop at a light or go thru a drive thru. Congratulations!!!! It is just so fun to do. Kristen

Gaby, you've become the reigning goddess of this thread. How does it feel?
All of what you said was very apropo, but I wanted to write about the sentence above. It is a hard thing to say, and I think that it is true. There is no predicting what changes can occur because of going out. So this is an important point if you have made promises to your spouse or family about what you will and won't do as a CD. Going out can accelerate whatever you think or feel about CDing, and sometimes can make it harder to honor those promises.
This is a great thread. Lots of good replies.

Gaby,
For me going out fully dressed and then to be ok doing it, has changed my outlook. I can't say at this point that I am totally comfortable at all times, but they have been good experiences for me.
I agree with all you said. People have lost their jobs over cross-dressing. I had that fear too. For me it has improved the confidence I have in myself and people in general. I have met so many good people when dressed. I know that could end at anytime with one bad apple, but I needed to do this only for myself. It was like being afraid of the water and then learning to swim anyway.
Again, I agree with you. Only dressing at home is great. I did it for 25 years. We aren't in a contest. No one is better than the next person that loves to dress fem!

I have been out dressed many a time at night, go to postoffice, drive around mall, etc. But the greatest thrill I ever had was going to dinner with a Tri-Ess group. Funny thing was nobody in the place payed one bit of attention to us
. I have tryed to go out a few times by myself to wal mart get all the way up to the door and chicken out when I see the lady waiting to welcome me. I just don't think I would pass and don't want the trouble of being ask to leave

I wholeheartedly agree with Gaby's statement that going out will bring out changes. Other than the occasional nighttime drive, my first experience out in public occurred last year. Prior to this, the idea that anyone might see me in women's attire was unthinkable. Since that time I've ventured out frequently, though not usually in my hometown. While no longer particularly concerned about stares from people I don't know, there is still the issue of being recognized by co-workers, neighbors or relatives. I must admit, however, that the more I go out, the more I look forward to the day when I can transcend this barrier as well.
This past weekend I traveled to another city for a sporting event and decided to spend an extra day there to get out for awhile. I purchased some books at the local Barnes & Noble, picked up some art supplies for my SO and later went to see "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", all while en femme. It felt so good to stop hiding, if only for a short time.
Sales clerks and people in service businesses are there to assist the customer, any customer, and will usually keep their opinions to themselves. Knock on wood; I have yet to encounter anything but professional and courteous staff in retail outlets. And make no mistake; I don't fool anyone for a second. As has been noted before, if you can't feel confident, make an even stronger effort to blend in (not necessarily the same thing as passing). Strutting in four-inch heels to the grocery store might seem appealing, but one - it's not terribly realistic and two, (IMHO) it reinforces some of the negative stereotypes that the general public has about crossdressers and the transgender community at large.

out dressed
Hello. I have gone on a 400 mile car trip fully dressed, I stop for gas where I can use my credit card, but once I had to go inside. It was one of those gas stations with the kiosk where they only sell gas. My luck there was two women there but they never said a word but I am sure they had a good laugh after I left. I went into a grocery store one time and it did not take long to be spotted. Some of the staff was laughing and pointing. I dumped my basket and got out with out buying anything. I have another trip coming up next week and fully expect to be traveling fully dressed in femme, should only have to stop once for gas. Keep on dressing. If it feels good do it. Bobbie Joe

I have not gone enfemme in years but there was a time I did it quite often.
I found it 'Wonderful' to walk in a skirt or dress feeling the breeze flow up and lift my skirts a little, feeling the breeze blow my hair, hearing the click of my shoes and the fear and thrill of it all was magic. At first it was in the park then on the street.
I then thought I had done it enough [a girl should try it a few times in her life] and Thought I should stop before I got caught and was sorry for it.
The desire has not returned. It could only be a matter of time that I could find myself embarrassed or worse beaten up.
But I do not regret it for one moment I'm glad Elinor had the chance just to walk down the street a few times at least feeling feminine feeling like a girl stockings brushing stockings, taut suspenders stretching oh girls it was lovely.
At least I will not die wondering.
Yes a Janegirl should try it a few times scary yes but fun. But you must take care there are weird people out there.
__To all the Janegirls out there who have gone enfemme
But girls don't feel you have too. But gosh it felt great at the time.________________

The past couple of weeks have been an eye-opener for me. It all started one Sunday morning when I knew I was going to be stuck in the house most of the day writing a term paper for a class. I decided to be the lady of the house, so to speak, for the day. When time came for lunch, I realized that there was nothing terribly interesting in the pantry, but I didn't want to switch back to "male mode" to make the trip to the store. I decided instead to make the trip just like I was (jean capris, woman's t-shirt, flip flops, breast forms and wig). Up to this point, I had not visited any stores in my home town while dressed.
When I reached the store, I found that the place was pretty busy. It took me two attempts to get up the nerve to walk through the front doors, but I finally made it. I checked out using the self-service lane. Surprisingly enough, no one took a second look the whole time. Since then, I've gone grocery shopping a few more times and picked up books for class at the local Barnes & Noble, again without raising any eyebrows. I don't know if people don't notice or don't care. I'm happy in either case. Of course, my voice pretty much confirms things when interacting with cashiers, but you can't have everything. My SO thinks that its the casual look that helps. It helps me to blend in a bit better.
Now if only I could accomplish what CJ and Elizabeth have managed. In any event, this beats living behind a closed door!
Take Care,
Angie

My answer to the poll:
No, I don't think I want to, but the idea is attractive. I just don't think I would be able to pass. And yes, I have gone out wearing women's clothing, but only at night with the goal of nobody seeing me. So I'm not sure which of those three to vote. Maybe I'll just view the results with a null vote.
Why I think I won't pass: Although I'm blessed with being skinny enough to earn the nickname "Heavy D" at college, at 6'0" and 145 pounds, I think my Adam's apple would be a permanent roadblock to passing. With skinny people like me, the Adam's apple sticks out a lot. My height is not as much of a problem - 6'0", although very tall for a woman, is not unheard of.

A few months ago,I asked if anyone had advice about this..Rikki was kind enough to mention that the wig might be a problem in the Fla sun..it wasn't. LOL turns out its more of of a foot problem..stil paying for that. Eight hours there..and not a problem.wig wise .make sure you have a loosely weaved one
The Disney staff was great...all ma'am and miss...So..I did it..and have advice for anyone considering it it in the future, if you care to ask
If I can figure out how to post pics...I will. All in all..a wonderful time,,a few funny looks....just one nasty comment from a 300lb woman who had a lot more problems than me. I'm still on a huge high from this..it was quite an experience. And most people just ignored us...so into their own thing..as many posts have said. I have lots more to say about that experience..if anyone is interested. Gosh darn it was great.
I'm not a spring chicken. just don;t want to to die wishing I had done this or that,,so doing it..57 yo old 145 lbs and ugly

Hi DeeDee,
That sounds wonderful!
Congrats on getting out and being yourself in a place as accepting as a theme park. I think you make a very solid point about getting out before you regret never having gone out.
Hopefully the gallery will be up soon and you can place some of the photos there.
