First time trying on in a store

Post by Veronica Smith »

Yesterday I finally got up the nerve to ask to try on some clothing in a store. I went to a Lane Bryant store and hoped to work up the courage to try something on. Unfortunately, it was fairly busy and I "chickened out". I did buy a lovely lavender camisole that was very similar to one I'd bought before. (The first one was pink.)

I went down the hall to a small lingerie store. There was only one clerk, an attractive lady about 25 years old, and no customers. When I walked in she asked if I needed some help and I told her I was "just looking". I spent some time looking around the store and she asked me a couple more times whether I needed some help. After about 20 minutes I'd looked at many things and picked out a garter belt and panties. As I looked at some camisole/tap pant sets she asked me if I was looking for something for my wife. I choked out a meek "yes". From my voice I was sure she could tell that wasn't true.

As I looked at the sets she occassionally looked over at me with a warm smile. After finding a set in pale green I walked over to her a weakly asked "would it be possible for me to try something on?"

"Of course," she replied, with great sincerity in her voice. I entered the dressing room and slipped off my pants and shirt, leaving me standing there in my pink camisole and pink lacy panties. It was such a thrill!!! Then I heard a male voice, a security guard from the mall came in to chat with the clerk. I almost panicked. The dressing room door was open at the bottom and not all that tall. I was afraid he would look over and be able to see the top of my head and tell I was a guy! But he left in a couple of minutes. Unfortunately the cami/pants set was too small. As I left the dressing room, she gave me another reassuring smile and asked if they fit ok. I told her it was too small. She told me those sets ran small and suggested I try a larger size.

I looked and couldn't find a green set in the larger size, but found a pale peach set that was the size I wanted, and another set I thought I'd try. I went back into the dressing room and tried on the peach set. As I undressed I heard the security guard come in again, then a female customer entered. I went ahead and tried on the two sets and they fit great, but I was still panicked as I put my boyclothes back on.

The guard left in a couple of minutes and I somewhat meekly left the dressing room. The woman wasn't looking my way as I walked over to the counter to pay for my purchases. The clerk was sooo nice as she rang up the sale. When she gave me my change I handed her a $5 bill and asked if she would please take that for being so kind to me. She was very gracious as she accepted it. She gave me a sweet smile as she handed me my bag and said she hoped I enjoyed my purchases.

I will alway be thankful that my first experience was with a clerk so kind and reassuring. It was such a thrill! I have to admit I can hardly wait to go try on some more clothes, and maybe to go back and thank that young lady for making me feel more accepted for being a crossdresser. She's the first person besides my wife to know for sure I was buying clothes for me. I've had others that seemed to suspect, but they never knew for sure.

I think you hear a lot about Lane Bryant because they are for large size "girls". There clothing starts at size 18 I believe.

Way to go Veronica =D> I applaude you, you are very brave. I've done a fair amount of shopping in my day, but have always been too scared to ask about the dressing rooms. Part of me always thought that most places wouldn't let men in women's dressing rooms, but appearantly that's not the case. I've heard of Lane Bryant too, but have never shopped there. I believe there is one in the mall near my home, I'll have to check them out.

Hurray for you! =D>

Your post brought back memories of the first time I asked a clerk if I could try something on.
It was at a Village East, which was the 'larger' woman's section of Gottschalk's in California.

The salesgirl was younger than me also.
She too was VERY nice and made me feel ESPECIALLY comfortable.

I shopped there a few times and never had a problem getting into the dressing rooms and back out before any other customers came in.

The last time I went, I brought her a gift certificate from a Beauty Salon.
I think it was enough to cover a manicure and maybe some other special service/item. I've forgotten exactly what.
She seemed surprised and very thankful for the 'tip'.

The last time I was in that store at that town, I saw that they moved the Village East into the main store.
I looked for the young lady but didn't see her.

It is SUCH A THRILL AND A RELIEF to find people like these who treat us SO nice!
There are good people out there!

Thanks for sharing your story.
It has brought back fond memories for me!

Hello All. My favourite thrift store has about eight stalls for trying on clothes, I quite often try on a dress or skirt. No one appears to take notice of who is going in or what they are trying on. Makes it easy and more comfortable than having to ask a sales person for a key. Bobbie Joe

Congrats ! =D> =D>

I've bought many articles of lingerie before, but I've never worked up enough courage to try anything on in the store.

Yes, we are certainly making progress!
Leslie, I hate to take exception to your statement about "thrift stores." I have found times in there that - well, I like silk blouses and in the "upscale stores" they would run $75.00 -$200.00" and I get them for $3.00!! I can assure you that if some of the blouses I have found, were put into a Macy's or VS box and given as gifts no one could tell the difference. What just tears me up is in some well, a lot of times I find blouses that are just "to die for,' and they are too small for me! But once in a while I get lucky, like Friday, I found two silk blouses, one white with lots of buttons down the from and frilly collar so feminine and the other an off white pull over blouse with brocade on the front and one button on the back absolutely georgeous!!! I really check them closely and they are perfect. I have even found some with the store tags still on them. I found a calf - length pleated, lined mint green skirt Friday that was one of the best finds I have ever had in a Goodwill! It is, in my opinion brand new, some GG bought it hung it in her closet and decided later it was not her, could not find the receipt so she donated it ; probably took a couple $100.00 off her income tax for it and now it is all mine!!! for $3.00 =D> =D> =D>
As for trying stuff on and since I do a lot of my shoppng at the Goodwill, I just carry my treasures into the changing room and try on those that I am not sure of.
