Cable BLOWS!! DSL is Better

Post by Lorna »

Cable internet? DO NOT be suckered in, people!! [-X

I was stuck without internet access for the better part of the day today... My only day off all week, this evening my plan was to catch up on e-mails, personal business and such. But that didn't happen as I couldn't get online. :?

The problem with cable internet is that it relies on local servers, much like your office computers. And we all know how often the office computers go down. Imagine an entire town.

Cable may be faster than DSL as they like to advertise, but at least DSL doesn't experience "outages" every few days. During one of these "outages" you can't access the internet at all. :? And it can take anywhere from several hours to a few days before you can get back online. It 's very frustrating to say the least. :? And with DSL, you'not obligated to use modems that WILL fry after only a few months. :? DSL is MUCH more reliable. A colleague of mine had had it for a few years and had never had a problem.

Meanwhile I've had cable, which is not that much faster, but my access will be down every few days. :?

To heck with cable. I pay $150/month for cable TV & internet package. And I get off light compared to what my friends pay. Most of them pay over $200/month for their packages. Geez. #-o

Well no more. Back to DSL I go! And as for TV, I'll get satellite. At the very least I will cut the TV/Internet bills in half.

CABLE SUCKS. End of story.

For those of you who have or had cable service, post your horror stories here! I know we all have them. #-o

FYI - My internet shut down TWICE as I was trying to post this message. I've been trying to post this since 6pm!

Hi Lorna,

My horror story is that I have not experienced your horror. I have cable high speed for far less than what you have been paying and am quite happy with it. I purchased my modem from my Internet provider, and it has worked fine ever since I first connected to the net

Sorry to hear of your distress though.

Love Darlene.

Hi Lorna,

I think Cablevision sucks. :) Comcast really rocks. I will say thought that DSL is making huge strides to improve things and in my opinion is about to catch up. Especially with lowering the price point, you know?

To me, comparing cable to DSL is like comparing a Corvette to a Toyota. The Corvette may be faster, but over a given time period, the Corvette WILL require a LOT more repair & maintenance than the Toyota. The Toyota, while not as fast, won't break down every so often.

Darlene - I think Cablevision has a LOT to learn from Comcast. :?

Beauty - You're right! Cablevision is the absolute WORST! #-o My friends who live in the city have Roadrunner cable, don't have all of these interruptions, and they LOVE it!! :-k

I do have a choice though. I can either go back to DSL or I can move. :?

I wouldn’t know about that I don’t have cable vision Lorna. I have a high speed internet connection from the same company that supplies cable vision and am very pleased with it. It includes a licensed (paid) version of a firewall, anti virus protector, and AD-Aware, plus round the clock technical support. All included in the monthly cost.

And I never have had anything happen to me like you have experienced.

Ummm... that is exactly why I said that my cable company has a lot to learn from Comcast, Darlene.

Hi again,

Cablevision is the worst cable provider ever.. ok I hear Adelphia was pretty horrible too, but OMG Cablevision just sucks.

I remember channel 12 and how I'd get stuck watching Long Island news over and over. I remember when then nuked having two NBCs when they got rid of the CT channels. That was my biggest buzz from Cablevision, that's how bad they were. #-o Oh the static of it all. :)

Ok, I'm starting to miss Long Island now. I want to drive to the sound or just drive down to Jones Beach at night, just to smell the fresh air and feel the breeze. That's another thread though. :)

Hi all,

Sounds like Cablevision is a company, a cable provider? We don’t have that here. Any company that supplies cable is seen as supplying cable vision.

Perhaps that has contributed to some confusion here.

Hi Darlene,

You are correct. It's a cable company in the NY area. :)

Not a problem, hon... I seem to have that problem a lot these days - every time I post there's always a misunderstanding. :? But anyway, Cablevision is the name of the cable provider here on Long Island where I live.

I subscribe to their cable internet service, in addition to their cable TV service.

I have no complaints from their cable TV end, but their cable internet leaves MUCH to be desired. Every few days, the internet service is down & I can't get online. This happens at least a couple of times a month. :? Yet they still charge a small fortune for what they consider to be "superior to DSL". Superior to DSL, my FOOT. :?

Well perhaps then they are due for a rude awakening. As they lose more and more Internet costomers.

We have ONLY comcast for a cable provider here making them monoply but they keep raising the raites on the cable TV even basic. They keep increasing the rates with no concern or more content when ever they feel it they just pay off the regulaters and they say sure thing.

I have only rarely experienced outages with my cable provider and never had a modem problem. Been using the same one for around three years now. Hooked it to a wireless router and run two (soon three) laptops from it.

Sorry your provider sucks, Lorna. DSL will probably be a better way for you to go.

We have Cable, Satelite and DSL over here in the UK, as well as dial-up for low budget connections.

What are you paying in US for DSL?
I currently have an uncapped 1024 Kbps connection for £23 per month, thats roughly $42. For the same money I can have double that speed but capped to 3GB per month on downloads.

Cable is available over here, supplied by a US company I think. Anybody heard of Cable & Wireless? Usually its tied in with a Telephone deal and Televison too. I used to have cable, it used to break down every so often especially after heavy rain.

Some folk have a satelite connection, its supposed to be very expensive.

Hi Kerri,

Is there a reason you can't get the double speed you mentioned or is it because you're pretty sure you'll go over the 3GB downloads per month?

I've heard of C&W. I didn't know they'd gotten into the ISP world. Though I guess with a name like that it shows how clueless I am at times.
