Good Movie!

Post by Jeannie »

A girl friend of mine(She knows about me is wonderful) suggested I see the movie"Normal". It stars Jessica Lange and it was very good. It's about a middle aged midwest couple and the husband comes out to his wife of 25 years. He is a transexual and wants a sex change operation. The story is treated in a realistic way and depicts how all the differant people in his life deal with the issue. In a way It's really a love story. So many movies about trensgendered people are campy or over the top but this movie shows people like us for who we are. Human beings who are just differant but not bad people. I think if you rent the video you will enjoy it. The very best to all you ladies.

Makes you think

I watched it some years ago and I took a long hard look at life, family, and myself. Like the others have said, it is done very well, touching on all the little parts of a very big event in the family's life. And that is what hit me the most, the effect on the whole family. It was a strong movie and the actors gave wonderful performances.

I looked at online reviews of the flic after it first aired and was somewhat saddened. Two critics gave the story bad marks because of the main character's "selfish" decision. Truly they had no idea of the complex nature of being transgendered. I gave the story high marks for the fact that the family showed total love for each other under what would be an unbelievably high stress event in their lives.

Everyone here should watch this film, not because the main character makes his/her change, but for the compassion, care, misunderstanding, confusion, and all the other complex emotions that living/loving with a transgendered person can bring.

Two big thumbs up.

I also saw that movie when it first debuted on HBO. What struck me was the knowledge of the lifestyle and problems involved that the authors had. It was an all-in-all good, thought provacitive movie. LOL..and darn the reviews anyway, I imagine most reviewer's experience with such a topic is limited to watching "Tootsie" or "Some like it hot". Worth watching.

I saw it earlier this year. I thought it was very well done. I think there was a thread started a while back on movies with a CD theme. Just a sec...
Here's the link for anyone interested.

This site always amazes me about the info/help I get. Also, what about viewing with a SO who still trying to understand? Watch them together or by myself? I would love any comments about that, :-k

Ladies a few years ago I saw a movie with Robert DiNiro and Phillip Michael Hoffman. Deniro was a retired Ney York City cop living in an apartment building with a transexual living in the apartment above. DiNiro couldn't stand him . DiNiro has a stroke and needs help and his neighbor comes to his aid. It's basically a story about friendship, acceptance and tolerance. Phillip Michael Hoffman does a great job playing a transexual. I think you'll recognize him. He is a character actor and has been in nunmerous movies in supporting roles. He's a terrific actor but no one knows his name. I love the few movies made about transgendered people that are realistic and not over the top or campy and we are potrayed as what we are. Human beings with feelings like everyone else and are just differant but not evil. Hugs and kisses to you all and wish you all the most comfortable and warm holidays.

Love you all
Jeannie
