Jessie:
I currently use bot a desk top and laptop. The software is all MS. Office XP withe ther full suite:
Word, Excell, Outllok, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Project.
The MS office suite is a full collection of applications that permit you to share data between the. They are common software that is utilized across the industry.
This will give you the ability to do spread sheets, presentions using power point, and mange projects or multiple taks by using project. Access is a database sofware. If I were to be getting a new machine, I would stick with a Laptop with a docking station or port repliator... This will permit you keep your devices plug into the docking station/ port replicatory and only remove the laptop when you need to..
If you are going to do a great deal of digital photo, movies, you are better serviced by getting a desktop. You need to know that the desktops are more robust that laptops and will provide you a longer service life.

I guess it would depend on just how mobile YOU are. If you do a lot of running around and need access to your computer while out, then look at the laptop or handheld. I have no experience with handheld so I can't advise on that score.

If you look to the laptop, then I recommend investing in a docking station for when you are at your desk at home. That would give you all of the ports that a standard desktop has for connection external scanners and such.

At the moment I have both a desktop and a laptop. Both are running MS Office. When in the docking station, my laptop performs as well with the graphics as my desktop. In fact, for some things, it does better as it has a faster processor than my desktop. But the desktop has a lot more RAM and a much bigger hard drive.

So, again, it really comes down to just how portable you need your computer to be. And, I tend to dissagree with Stephanie H about the robustness and service life of laptop vs. desktop. Both of mine have had a lot of use as well as abuse and are both more than four years old. But they are both still going strong. My laptop in an IBM R31 and my desktop is one I built from the motherboard on up.

Good luck!

Kathy

Well I asked my dad and he suggest I wait tell almost the end of the year. I am looking at getting a handheld as I mostly want to use it for writting. I will add a portable keyboard to make it easier. I am thinking of getting a Dell Axiem in that case. I could wait a little longer. Thanks for all your suggestions

Hi
I just got a new desktop since i do a lot of photos, etc. But with the cost of electricty going up, i sometimes wonder if a laptop wouldn;t have been better...

Personally, I'd go for a laptop unless you need to horsepower of desktop (for photo/video-editing, gaming, etc.) Especially with WiFi around the house (and elsewhere) it's nice to able to move around when you want to.

My Mac laptop is almost three years old and doing fine, however, I would recommend getting an extended warranty, since laptop do tend to take more abuse. (Mine paid for itself, when the hinge broke -- a design flaw with the that model of PowerBook.)

I have a Dell laptop notebook - about 2 years old. So far, it's still running well with no major problems, but then again I only use it once in a blue moon. Sony also makes good reliable laptop notebooks as well - my best friend has had his for two years as well, and uses it frequently for work.

Speaking from experience I would totally steer clear of HP or eMachines computers. Nothing but problems with those! #-o

Desktop? Laptop? Handheld?

Sounds like you're shopping for a kitten or maybe a pet rabbit, Jessie.

Good luck!

I use an HP laptop with wireless. I can use my 'puter from anywhere in the house and am not tied to my desk. My laptop is plenty powerful to run most applications, save for some of the newer games, which I don't play anyway.
