I think it works OK if I don't have too much hair to start with. However, it takes a lot to do it. The first time, after not shaving for over two weeks, results were spotty and I finished the job with shaving. The second time, results were better. I thought that, since it only cost $5.00 a bottle, that it would be a better deal than shaving. However, taking a third of a bottle per use, that comes out to $1.67 a use. Plus, I've read reports of Nair not being good for very long once it's opened.
Shaving, on the other hand... sure Venus razor blades cost about $2.00 each, but each one can be used three or four times, so it works out to only 50 to 67 cents a shaving. I think that gel is redundant if I do it in the bath.
So shaving is the better deal. Waxing didn't work on my strong hair roots. So I gambled and lost $5.00. Big deal. I got a lot of money for Christmas, and I'm planning on going gambling with much more than that anyway.
Just tried Nair, and...

Daniel,
You didn't specify the area you were using Nair on, so I'm going to assume it's your legs.
People differ as to how much hair is on their legs and how effective different hair removal methods are.
I think the posting of your experience is valuable for other members.
Good luck in your search for the best solution for you.

You assumed correctly. I should have been more clear on that.
My second result was also spotty. I had to finish the job with shaving. I may have been hesitant to spread it on thick enough, and perhaps trying to do both legs all at once was problematic.
Probably, also because I'm not 100% sure this crossdressing is going to continue for life, I want the fully reversible method of shaving. Repeated Nair treatments will cause gradual permanent loss of my hair, but I don't think two half-baked treatments are really going to do any damage.

It took me quite a while to get the nerve to shave and a lot of research about how best to proceed. I tried Nair first and couldn't stand the smell and its application restrictions. Do not use it everywhere.
Then I tried Nads which was very painful and not effective either. Guess my hairs were stubborn too.
Finally I settled on the razor and gel and have been pretty satisfied with that for about 1 1/2 years now. I still occasionally get a small bit of razor burn in delicate areas but if I apply lotion it will go away very quickly. I've found that the newer the blade the better it does, so I spend a few bucks more buying new ones after 2 or three uses. I then keep them for my face.
I do a complete body shave (medium amount of hair), and it takes about 1 to 1 1/2 hours for the full thing. I shave my breasts, underarms and legs almost daily so the time is cut short considerably.
Good luck finding your way. Just enjoy the results!

I started off with nothing. I still have most of it.

Hi Girls:
If you missed reading the LASER and IPL threads for permanent hair removal, take the time to look them over.
The problem really is very simple. "Biology and Human Anatomy" coupled with current chemistry. Male hair actually is constructed the same but and that is a big but girls, male hair chemistry is different. Sorry but it is a fact. So, "NAIR" and similar products were developed for [GG] people with the appropriate [B&HA].
If you are confused, think about the formulae for water and for hydrogen peroxide. Water is H2O and hydrogen peroxide is H2O2....
So, what is that. Water atoms are 2 hydrogen moecules and 1 oxygen molecule. Just draw three circles on a sheet of paper and mark two H and one of those O. They should be in a circle so they all touch each other. That's water you can drink.
Fix 4 circles all touching and mark 2 H and 2 O.
That is peroxide, clear none the less, do not drink in quality. Gargle diluted 50/50 with water is okay...
There is a huge difference and yet there is compatibility as well.
Human female and male hair are similar to this idea. Many simularities, compatibilties but they are different. Thus different hair dye formulas etc.
So, temporary hair removal is done best by shaver. Ooch, ouch but, it is reasonable in cost and efficiency with very little skin reactions if done with a mild lubricant for the skin surface. After all, the blade is dragging accross the skin to go over the pore (hole) with the hair in it. Your gonna loose some skin gals, no matter what.
The new IPL home unit from Gillette will be based on female hair type and very lower in power [FDA restriction of OTC items] so as not to dip into the medical doctor practice model that has much higher power and effectiveness not to mention a money maker for the doctors.
The FDA figures we can not be trusted with anything that is too powerful or effective. Perhaps they are right. Look at what we have managed to do with guns in the USA!!!
So, just keep in mind that there is a science to this and ignoring it will not help you. Apply the known methods as you see fit.
Hugs
