Hmmmm. I know he's a writer and I think he's from Yugoslavia and I'll guess he's still alive. I didn't want to Google it.That's like bringing a cheat sheet into your exam. By the way CJ I didn't tell you what happens if any of us post a wrong answer. I'll wait to tell you all when I see if I made the first mistake!

Hi all,

Yes, Vaclav Havel is still very much alive and active. And so is Lena Horne (who's in her 80's or 90's now, I think). She just released an album on Blue Note earlier this year that includes a killer version of Stormy Weather.

Gene Raymond --- brings back memories. He was a handsome leading man, and I remember he was married to Jeanette MacDonald. I know she is dead, but I have no idea about Gene. If alive he must be in his 90's. I am sure he can be Googled.

We may be talking about two different people, here; Gene Raymond (don't know him) and Gene Rayburn, about whom I'm inquiring. Gene Rayburn was best known as the host of various incarnations of Celebrity Match Game.

PS. CJ. My son John Paul and his two friends want to take a few days off in August to go Montreal. If they do go, maybe you could offer a few tips for them not so much what to do but what not to do if you know what I mean! They are 19 and 20 year olds. When the kids were small you worry about them but when they are older and out there driving all over the place you really worry. I remember when I was that age! If my parents only knew!

Gene Rayburn is currently hosting Deceased Celebrity Match Game. I loved the way he used to burst out laughing (I think what anglophones call a "guffaw"). He was witty and had an easy charm that was both professional and friendly at the same time.

About John Paul and company, a lot depends on when they're coming and how long they're staying. I'll tell you right off the bat: right now, we're going through a somewhat unpleasant heat wave with temperatures in the mid-90's (in the mid-100's with the Humidex factor). The last two weeks of July are usually the hottest in Montreal (and to say that Beauty will be dropping by right about that time--poor soul!

) but, if John Paul is coming in August, he and his friends should have excellent weather.

Here's a respectable link with Montreal tourist info: InfoMontreal.com Pass it on to him. A couple of things he should know if he plans to drive around in Montreal:

1) All speed and distance indications are in kilometers, not miles, so he should familiarize himself at least a little with metric counterparts to the Imperial system.

2) Right turns on a red light are allowed everywhere in the province of Quebec (when possible, of course!)... except in Montreal. There are two main reasons for this: Montreal drivers aren't the best drivers in the world (a fact that Vermont, Maine, and New York state troopers both love and hate at the same time) and, also, Montreal pedestrians basically rule the city streets (most act as if traffic lights are invisible or that they don't apply to pedestrians). Caution (and patience) are in order for an out-of-town driver.

3) Gas is fairly expensive here (these days, about $1.15 CN/liter, or about $3.50 US/gallon) so he should take that into consideration if he'll be driving.

Personally, I think he and his friends'll have a grand ol' time. If there's anything else I can do just let me know, eh?

PS Thanks for the info. It sounds like Waterbury! Only there are things to do in Montreal! It's 97 here today and very humid. Our gas prices are the same But we've got you beat on the driving. People here go right on red,left on red and straight on red. When the light turns green 2 or 3 cars blow right through the red light. It's nuts. The cops just stand around with their thumbs up ..Well. You know where! Gotta get back to work. It's a brutal commute. Down three flights of stairs in heels and the hallway is hot. Poor little Jeannie! You have suffer to sing the blues!
