Hi Girls:
I thought that with my background, I could be of benefit if I were to provide some insight into the world of "Chemistry and Cosmetics."
Quote:
The notion that mineral oil and petrolatum (Vaseline) are bad for skin has been around for some time, with Aveda being the most visible company to mount a crusade deriding these ingredients. According to many companies that produce "natural" cosmetics, mineral oil and petrolatum are terrible ingredients because they come from crude oil (petroleum) and are used in industry as metal-cutting fluid (among other uses) and, therefore, can harm the skin by forming an oil film and suffocating it.
This foolish, recurring misinformation about mineral oil and petrolatum is maddening. After all, crude oil is as natural as any other earth-derived substance. Moreover, lots of ingredients are derived from awful-sounding sources but are nevertheless benign and totally safe. Salt is a perfect example. Common table salt is sodium chloride, composed of sodium and chloride, but salt doesn't have the caustic properties of chloride (a form of chlorine) or the unstable explosiveness of sodium. In fact, it is a completely different compound with the harmful properties of neither of its components.
Cosmetics-grade mineral oil and petrolatum are considered the safest, most nonirritating moisturizing ingredients ever found (Sources: Cosmetics & Toiletries, January 2001, page 79; Cosmetic Dermatology, September 2000, pages 44–46). Yes, they can keep air off the skin to some extent, but that's what a good antioxidant is supposed to do; they don't suffocate skin! Moreover, petrolatum and mineral oil are known for being efficacious in wound healing, and are also considered to be among the most effective moisturizing ingredients available (Source: Cosmetics & Toiletries, February 1998, pages 33–40).

The link will provide additional information on "Mineral Oil."
Mineral oil or liquid petrolatum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline.
Now before we go off the deep end here girls, this product is just about in every cosmetic over-the-counter product. Just look at the ingredient label and usually, mineral oil is first on the list as the primary ingredient.
I personally have used "baby oil" to remove makeup etc. So, for the most part, it has been determined the past 100 years to be a safe item for your cosmetic shelf. Many creams that employ mineral oil also add parafin to help coat your skin, keeping the oil on the surface to hold moisture in during the day and keep your skin soft and supple.
All of the sub-products that we buy in the store just add minor product additives to maintain color and consistency.
The next entry will cover the natural alternative, [Olive Oil.]
Yes girls, you can use this on your skin too and it will not clog your pores and provides great antioxidant benefits as well.

Topic: Olive Oil
Source: Derived from pressing of natural olives.

The link will take you to a page on this natural substance.
I have been using a high grade Olive Oil for my skin. Most recently, the face area, to effectively bring back a more youthful appareance. "Extra Virgin Olive Oil," is oil from the first pressing of the olives. You pay more for this grade. True, this is vegtable fat unlike mineral oil which is synthesized from petroleum crude when through distilation to make gasoline.
So Olive Oil comes with a label reflecting a digestible product and specifications, unlike mineral oil. Olive Oil is a true fat. A monounsaturated fat. Considered in medical journals as a good alternative to other types of vegtable fat such as corn oil. As an oil, Olive Oil is considered the one true antioxidant source for humans to consumme and has been part of the dietary needs of many Countries for many centuries.
By using a small finger dip of oil on my face at night, I awaken with much better skin appearance and my norelco shaver glides over my face with no further additives. Having IPL to remove most of my facial hair is also an added feature that makes this all work so well.
In the future, try for 30 days the Olive Oil treatment, using "Extra Virgin Oil," of your brand choosing on one side of your face. Always use a good cleansing solution before applying the oil. I use "baby shampoo" from Johnson and Johnson, to clear my face after first applying mineral oil to remove the make-up, then the baby shampoo, then towel dry and add the Olive Oil. Two finger tips worth. Rub in and GLOW girls!
Hugs

Thanks for the info, honey!!!! A few days ago I spilled some "extra virgin olive oil" and in the process of cleaning it up I did manage to rub it on my hands and I could see and feel and almost immediate improvement. So I will start a regiment with it tomorrow!
Thanks again!

For those that want the additional experience of Olive oil that has been cold processed to thin the oil while keeping the antioxidant capabilities then the link will take you to DHC cosmetics that uses all natural Olive oil in their chemistry instead of mineral oil.
Frankly girls, there is really nothing that can stop the aging process but you can tone and enhance your skin surface if you have not already been too badly damaged by the sun and the free radicals that subsequently occur.
Q10 is such a product compound and is very popular now in upscale products. The amount that they use in over-the-counter products is extremely minimal though. For any real major change you would need to get the prescription version through your doctor.
Daily use of Olive oil (extra vigin oil only) over time can and will be very beneficial. I also use it lightly as a base before applying liquid makeup. It may seem contrary to doing so as you do not want oily looking skin but it is absorbed by the skin. So with a good healthy cleaning regimen everyday, it will not cause any acne or skin cell infections.

Hi Donna:
I went to your link and agree completely. Vinegar has 1001 uses as well. The Roman soldiers would carry a sponge (natural, not todays cellulose) and put it to their lips to relieve their hunger and thirst as it would turn-off those signals for a short period of time. They of course used vinegar from red wine, the same that we use today to mix with our extra virgin Olive Oil on salads.
The same fat that our bodies can actually make is the equivelent to that of Olive Oil. There was a time when fish and Olive Oil and Vinegar, along with a handful of spices were the staples of life for the those that lived around the Mediteranean Sea. Greeks, Romans etc. Many of the staunch residents of Athens, Greece still use this as their main diet. I lived there for a short time and it was on every table in town that I would visit.

A previous entry from PaulaVI don't know if it's too late to coment on this topic, but I recently added a step to my leg shaving ritual that helps moisturize and keeps the nicks down to virtually nothing. I spread olive oil on my legs as if it were a bottled moisturizer before showering and while in the shower I lather up and shave the legs. Weird as this sounds, it works great for me. I have sensitive dry skin and usually any product with cream or scent in it causes me to break out. Olive oil saves the day for me and I use it on my face prior to the shower also and I use it as a pre-makeup moisturizer since makeup tends to dry my face as well.
One last use and I'll drop this subject. Olive oil makes a great hair conditioner.

Hi Girls:
Virginia, you are a very funny girlfriend indeed!
"Extra Virgin" is really reserved for those that profess to be Nuns. They have that little "extra" support from a "higher authority."
Oh My!
Now back to business.
There are several "brands" of Olive oil. I have looked at all that are on the shelf at my Super Walmart. There is no real means by which I can make any scientific comparison statements.
Some are darker than others in color and thicker in their consistency. Some have a stronger olive odor and many are mixed from several contributing Countries.
So, I use the "Pompeian" brand which is strickly Olives from Spain. No particular reason. I like the light odor and mild taste. I do not want to smell like I just came in from the Olive farm! So, I chose one that meets "my needs."
"Light Olive Oil" you will notice is light in color and thinner in its consistency. If you have a favorite EV oil that is too thick in reality, then you can add 10 or 20% mineral oil to thin the mixture. The two oils will mix nicely. Olive oil is absorbed into the skin quickly. Mineral oil on the other hand stays on the surface longer so that is the reason so many products use mineral oil. Very cheap in quantity and stays on the surface longer to hold in moisture. They add "emolulents that help to hold the moisture and to coat the dry skin so it feels soft all day. In fact, the dry skin is still there. You just do not see the dead cells that are normally dry and flaky.
Soooo, Olive Oil on it's own is absorbed fairly quickly by the body and is processed like any other digestable product. Mineral oil is carried out of the body with no real benefit to the internal organs or cells. Mineral oil, a tablespoon or two, will pass direct into the large colon and in about 6 hours, help with any bowel evacuation. One of it's many uses.
Olive Oil on the other hand is processed like corn oil etc. The body makes use of it differently. So, it does not directly benefit you in the same manner for bowel evacuation as does the non-digestible mineral oil.
Plain cheaper Olive oil and light Olive oil are made by combining a small portion of 2nd press oil and oil that has been "refined." The lowest grade of useable olive oil is "refined" oil. I do not recommed this grade of oil other than for cooking your fried chicken,
. Not a good table oil for salad as the "EV" Olive oil is.
Emolulents are like paraffin oil that forms a barrier over the skin but by it self is thick and hard to spread. So they add it to mineral oil that safely thins the emolulents so they can coat the skin and leave a smooth feeling. Stop using everything for a week or less and you will feel dry and rough. None of these products stimulate the body into the regeneration of more or better or more healthy looking cells. They just "coat" or "seal." The exception is Olive oil's benefits to internal organs it is believed such as the heart and arteries.
Lastly, if you do chose to mix the Oilive Oil with mineral oil(baby oil), then you will notice that the oil-like appearance stays longer on the skin as the two oils absorbtion rate into the skin is rather different. This could be considered beneficial in appearance as the skin keeps the moisture longer and makes you look more "radiant."
On the other hand, if your skin is already oily, stick with the faster absorbing Oilive oil when doing the make-up.
Glow girls glow! That is what we all want to do, just glow and prosper!
Are you feeling comfy girls
remember the "comfy couch" on childrens TV.
POST NOTE: People that profess to be a true "connoisseur" of EV Olive Oil etc., inspect it for color, taste and let us not forget, "bouquet." That subtle scent of Olive for everyday use. Special occassions require that one bring out the "heavy artillery" of EV Olive Oil, one that may be brutish and stong with a darker color. We too girls can be "upscale" and snooty!
Or, we can retire to the powder room while the boys smoke their cigars, and indulge their fantasies about being in charge over a pungent but masculine EV Olive oil.
Hugs

I love olive oil especially extra virgin like Virginia!
Hi ladies
I use a foot bath regularly and put a bit of bubble bath and extra virgin olive oil in it. I cut a lemon or lime in half and do my toes like an orange juicer. I use 600 emory cloth before to make them smoother than a babies bottom. I just went for a pedicure and womanicure at the spa and Tory who always does it said"You have nicest feet".
I always thought that was my best feature. My wife used to say"You and your stupid feet!" Hey ladies. If you got em' flaunt em'! I'm lucky I don't have those big flippers like Tyra Banks. She could palm a basketball with those ET toes! Hugs
Love
Jeannie
PS. That's how I got Mini into the sack for the first time when we were going out. I told her I had a nice foot for her. Boy was she was disappointed! I'm Italian but I must have the Irish curse!

Topic: LENTIGINES
Source: http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_d ... gines.html
Lentigines, or liver spots, are benign lesions that occur on the sun-exposed areas of the body. The backs of hands and face are common areas. The lesions tend to increase in number with age, making them common among the middle age and older population. They can vary in size from 0.2 to 2 cm. These flat lesions usually have discrete borders, are dark in color, and have an irregular shape.
These lesions are caused by a marked increase in the number of pigment cells located in the superficial layers of the skin. A biopsy should be considered if a lesion develops a highly irregular border, changes in pigmentation, or changes in the thickness to rule out cancer.
Lentigines are usually benign therefore treatment is not necessary. For cosmetic purposes, some successful treatments include: cryotherapy, hydroquinone preparations (bleaching preparations), retinoids, chemical peels or lasers. Protective measures should be taken to avoid any excessive sunlight exposure. These include sunscreen and protective clothing, such as hats and long sleeves
POST NOTE: IPL Therapy is most preferred for several spots to be removed that are close enough together for the light element to cover all at once. You pay by the square inch for this type of medical service. In LASER, you pay the same, but, the LASER is a pin-point device so IPL is better for quick large coverage. Both technologies have been reported to be effective. IPL also will reduce skin discoloration where LASER is often not used for large areas of surface pigmentation discoloration.
As always, consult your physician of choice and get the facts.
Hugs
