Question: what is with the look down?

Post by Aileen »

When a GG is complimented on her dress, the first thing she will do is look down at it. Why is that? I'm only asking because I'm curious.

I had never given it much thought... I can hypothesize though!

Looking back, when I have been complimented on my clothes, usually I look down as more of a "huh?" responce. It could be because...

A) I'm not actively thinking about what I'm wearing
B) The thought of it being compliment-worthy never really crossed my mind.

I think those would be my two main guesses in regards to the "look down".

Sometimes one just needs to remind themselves about what they are wearing, especially if one doesn't get many compliments.

It's modesty. Women, especially those of us raised on the cusp of women's lib, were taught to accept a compliment with humility and a bit of modesty. Some women actually blush at the compliment - most of us just avert our eyes.

Nice observation on your part....

And here we thought that was Classified as Top Secret!! :P

Aileen - I would have to agree with everyone's comments, for I have done the same thing without even thinking about it. You have a good eye for details!

Hugs, everyone!

Women so seldom wear dresses where I work, that whenever I see that look down I always imagine her saying, "Oh my gosh! You're right! I am wearing a dress! How'd that happen?"

It's in the genes

You are so right--and I never noticed that I too do what you described. It's just an automatic GG thing--like when you kiss someone both standing, one foot pops up (with toe pointed) behind you.

Interesting question... DonnaT and Isabelle kind of answered for me.

I honestly will forget what I'm wearing and want to remember (no lie... I get distracted easily!) or I won't even realize that I've looked down. It's kind of automatic.
