The time warp has my head spinning

Nope, it's not about Rocky Horror. Read on:

I got out my video copy of Field of Dreams last night. For those who don't remember, it's a 1989 Kevin Costner film, and his character is a farmer who builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield. Old-time ballplayers appear out of the cornfield to play on the diamond, the most notable one being "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, the Chicago White Sox star.

What struck me was the big gap between late 80s technology, and what we have now. I haven't been watching that many movies lately, but a modern movie without cell phones and Internet access is strange to watch. When Costner's character wants to do research on a famous reclusive writer, he has to go down to a college library, and we see him looking at microfilms, and poring through reference books. When he's on the road, away from his wife, he has to keep her updated from pay phones at gas stations along the way. I guess it wouldn't seem so strange to me if it's a 1969 movie, as that's far away in time. But 1989 does not seem long ago to me! Seventeen years fly by, at my age.

Anyway, if it were 1989, I would not know 99.9% of you folks! Maybe I'd have answered one personal ad in a crossdresser's magazine, or something, and made a contact. What a wide-open world it is, to have this community here, and many more like it!

Who better to try and face the necessity of adaptation than us!!!! With the change in the government and Nancy P in the wings to be the new speaker, if nothing else the Democrats tolerance for diversity, even if it is only lip-service, will at the very least bring the part of society that "we" seem to be relegated to back to the stage. Not as a star or even the second team, but at least we can be almost assured a place on stage and the more that "society" is told about "us" and our ilk, the nose of the camel gets a little further under the tent!

Anita,
You're so right. Without this form of communications I would still feel like "the only one" with my passion for fashion. Never in a million years would I have responded (or even looked at) a CD magazine or dared to meet another person in the flesh.

Through this medium, I have made so many real friends and come to understand myself better. As much as I hate 'puters some days, thank goodness they are here to bring "us" all together in a safe and enlightening way.

Oh, and I agree, "time does fly, with rocket engines!!"

Hi all,

Good point, Anita. You know, we'll think back on this moment in time (2006) and we'll say, "Gawd! To think we actually had to hold hardware such as phones and computers in our hands rather than just having a software/wetware interface built right into our skulls like we do today. My, how time flies!"

Love,
CJ

THis first struck me watching When harry met Sally. THere is a vignette with them not returning each others calls but listening sadly to the messages they leave each other on their answering machines. I thought about how quickly answering machines have become a part of our society and that probably everyone identified with that scene, even though 20 years ago it would have been an impossiblitiy.
