As part of a week long vacation we just went on, Stormy (my wife) thought I should get acrilic nails put on for it -- so of course I did! BTW--it was very cool!
So now the vacation is over, and I must be in drab mode. So I took the polish off and cut/files them down to about my normal length to prepare to take off the acrylics. But I noticed that they look (except upon very careful scrutiny) like my regular nails. Stormy agreed. So I am going to keep them for now and figure out what to do when it gets to be time for a fill -- I may remove them then.
Does anyone wear them full time at a normal length? Any good reasons other than vanity? (They are so much easier to polish and remove the polish completely). I'm trying to figure out if I can or should jsutify it. Also trying to figure out how to deal with it at the nail salon--short of going as Missy each time...and then making sure they keep them short.
Just a short update -- I have decided to get a fill, wife and I are going to the nail salon on Sunday--girls day out. Nails and then a little shopping.
Reason that decided it was that I have a wedding to participate in coming up soon and if I took the acryics off now, nails would still look crappy then. Probably taking them off right after the wedding. Depending on how that goes will determine what I do in the future. Guessing I will happily put them back on next time I get the chance to dress for a week or so straight.
Really would like to hear from anyone who has dealt with the nail thing and has kept them on for any length of time. Lets hear from you ladies!!
I wear acrylic nails all the time. In southern california lots of women do, so it's pretty common here. I love having my nails done because they don't break nearly as easy. However if you break one, it's usually fairly traumatic and can hurt. But something pretty drastic has to happen to break one.
Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you will need to get them filled every two to three weeks, although at three weeks they start looking pretty shabby. Some people get them filled every week. Other than that, remember age appropriate styles apply to nails too. One inch curly nails with a little flower on the end may look cool in your teens or early twenties, but it's kind of a kid thing.
Most girls here get the white square tips with the rest of the nail either neutral or pink. I go for the more traditional rounded tip medium length nail. Bright red is for Christmas and hookers. J/k, but remember that bright red sends out strong sexual signals. You may not want that kind of attention.
I love them, but I take them off from time to time because I also love playing the guitar. One more thing. Don't let them grind your nail down before they put that acrylic one on. This is a trick to make your nails weak so it will be very uncomfortable to not have acrylic nails. I always tell them I have already filed my nails, please don't file them anymore. They will say they need to, so the new nail will stay on, but it's not true. Just tell them you will risk it.

I agree with your advice, Elizabeth . . . Acrylic nails look nice, but don't let them grind your real nails!!
The one and only time that I had ever had acrylic nails - for my sister's wedding - the tech used the grinder on my nails first, and said it was to make the new nail stay on better. Well, I wish I knew then what I know now!! When the acrylic nails popped off about 2 weeks later, my real nails were very weak. I also had uneven ridges/waves on the nail itself due to the grinder. It took at least 6 months for my nails to return to their original strength and some semblance of smoothness.

A friend and fellow musician in the '70s and '80s played the pedal steel and a mean electric guitar, and strengthened his nails with Lee Nails, something akin to acrylics. He was able to keep them the perfect length for picking his guitars and they gave him a unique and great sound.
I have been wearing acrylics full time for three years or so. It was actually my wife's idea as I work in construction and was often coming home with torn, broken nails. I keep mine a little longer than would be typical for males, but not overly long. And I've never gotten any questions/bad comments about them, only a comment every now and then from observant GGs that my nails certainly look good for somebody in construction. I get a fill every other week and keep clear polish on them (except when going out in femme mode, then it's colors), the once in a while broken nail these days is easily repaired by the nail tech. About two years ago my wife suggested that I should have my eyebrows waxed while we are at the salon, so now that's a regular thing too. I'll probably continue with both for the foreseeable future as my real nails were extremely brittle and my eyebrows were bushier than my wife liked.
