At Home Electrolysis ??!!!!!
Yo! Donna or someone, let me know if you know anything about this:
Sharper Image catalogue -- Holiday 2007 page 57.
"Forget the needles!!! Clinically proven home electrolysis systems safely removes unwanted hair - painless and permanently."
"In clinical studies at a U.S. medical school, the gentle galvanic technology behind these innovative systems was shown to be as effective as needle electrolysis at permanently removing unwanted hair! Both systems come with storage pouch, tweezers, plus prep cleanser; each features a built-in timer with audible alert and LED indicator for best results."
There are two - one for the face called the e-Pen --$69.95
the other is e-Pad, body Electrolysis System also --$69.95
Maybe more info on the net??

Never Mind!!!!
I went to the website and read the instruction manuals they have and bought both of them. They should be here by the week-end. It says to not use them more than three times a day ------------------ 'er sorry I think that was 3x a week and you should see considerable results in 90 days. They work like the single needle electrolysis except there is this sodium something infused pad with electrodes attached and according to the manual it will affect many more hairs at one time than a single needle will. They have different size and shape pads and the pen does a much smaller area than the pad, like the corners of your mouth and they have a "banana" shaped pad for the upper lip and they say if you clean your skin properly and apply the gel they supply it is completely painless. Each treatment, for example will take about 11 minutes on the upper lip and various other times for other areas. The Pad has a timer on it as well.
I will keep you appraised of how it seem to work. Just last night SL and I were discussing my having some electrolysis done and I had looked in the phone book to see how many places here in "BedRock" offered the service. Two is all!!!
Love,
Virginia

Well, maybe you should have let me respond?!
They won't work. Heck, I haven't even seen a picture of them, and I can confidently say they won't work.
For electrolysis, a hair-thin metal probe is slid into a hair follicle. Electricity is delivered to the follicle through the probe, which causes localized damage to the areas that generate hairs in one of three ways, depending on the system used. DC, AC or both.
Hair is not conductive, thus an electrical current cannot follow the hair shaft to reach the root. This is why the probe is inserted into the hair follicle.
On the face, the follicle is quite deep, compared to other areas of the body.
For electrical current to reach the follicle using any surface application, like an e-pen, it would have to be a high current. This current would not be localized, and thus would heat the salt water in the surrounding skin tissue, and would cause burns.
An e-pen does not have a high current, thus no-one gets burned. Except financially.
However, the hair will not be dead and the tweezers simply remove the hair like any ordinary pair of tweezers.

I bet the instructions state that the current is applied until the timer expires, suggesting the hair follicle has been destroyed. Then they probably tell you to pull the hair out using the tweezers. Both systems come with storage pouch, tweezers, plus prep cleanser; each features a built-in timer with audible alert and LED indicator for best results."

Hi Virginia
Gee, I hate to sound negative, but having researched those home devices, I wasn't overly impressed with customer reviews. Here's an example from Drugstore.com about a more expensive one http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod. ... 83&tab=1#1
I also check Epinions.com and amazon for comments and prices.
One last thing, Sharper Image is in a bit of a bind now and I would be concerned if they were around to back up the warranty (if any) http://money.cnn.com/2007/10/12/news/co ... /index.htm
Sigh, I tried home wax kits (ouch) but I guess the best thing is the expensive route. Well, ok, sometimes when I light my grill I get instant hair removal (don't try this at home kids).

Thanks ladies for your input. I guess I am the eternal optimist. Plus, there were a few postive comments about a similar piece of equipment, that if you follow the instructions carefully that you can get good results.
Also, the final cost is less than two sessions here, so I am going to give it a try. From what I have been able to surmise, the new gel is an improvement over the previous and not only penetrates the skin better, but is also a better conductor as well.
Again, thanks so much for your input and I will keep you posted as to how it works, who knows, it just may be the "Fountain of Youth."

Virginia

Virginia: If there are other ladies close to you willing to split the cost, one highly-recommended economical approach is to buy a used professional electrolysis unit and learn to work on each other. When you're done with it, you can either get a license and have a new job, or sell the unit to someone else. If you take this approach, be certain to purchase many new sterile probes and don't re-use probes at all, if you can help it.

First session with my "in home hair removal."
Well the directions say up to 90 days for results. I put the pre-event liquid on like the directions say, removed it then attached the one pad to my upper lip and the other to my chest. I got all the sensations that the directions said I could get, the tingling on my lip and the slight heating sensation as well as the metallic taste (if you have any fillings) and the very slight shock on my chest. When the timer went off I removed the pads and I had a perfect light red mark across my upper lip where the pad had been, but no pain at all.
The one problem I have with the directions is that it says to "cut" / "shave" the area prior to using the stuff, then it says to use the tweezers to pull out the "dead" hair -- sorry, it don't work that way for me. Next time I am going to shave first then do the treatment and no plucking. I mean if this happens to kill the hair, why pluck it!?
They recommend no more than two treatments to an area a week, so guess I will attack another area tomorrow.
Oh, one other side affect, I went from a B-cup to a D-cup!!! Gheesh, just kidding.
Will keep you posted.

Hi DeeDee,
Sorry, nothing much to report yet! I have been using the thing on my upper lip mainly and have given myself three or four "treatments" so far. Reading the directions I am experiencing what the information says I should, but as for any actual thinning of the hair I can't really say. However, I will have to admit that I think something is going on because if I let it grow out for a couple of days it does seem, somehow different. I can't really put my finger on it yet but it does seem different.
Tell you what, when SL and I come down to stay with you in May next year, I will bring both kits with me and you can try them. Hopefully by then I will have experienced the ultimate in "in-home" hair removal and can say that it does work!!!!
Love ya,
Virginia

Well, today I went to a Facial Dermatology place here and talked with them about what they could or could not do to this "mug?!"
She said they definitely could NOT help my facial hair. No current laser on the market can deal with white or gray hair. She did say that they were aware of a new type of laser being developed in - where else! California that will do that but it is not on the market yet!!!! Well, you know us CD'er's --- slow but steady!!!!
Anyway I have my first appointment for a TCA Peel in a week. Then after recovery from that, about 3 weeks or so, I start a ?DPL?" for age spots. Which she said I had very few and that maybe two or three sessions would take care of that and at the same time something called "laser genesis" for wrinkles and that could be up to 6 recommended treatments. Those she said will smooth out the skin and it will really do wonders for that "smooth, even complexion." I have not told them I am a NOTS yet. As you know, my philosophy is "a need to know." I will not hesitate if asked, but we shall see how it goes.
She said my skin looked good and that it should really do fine with these treatments. I will keep you posted on this.
As for the "at home" electrolysis, I am continuing it as well but as the books says, it can take up to three months to see any changes and it has only been a few weeks.
In beauty,
Love,
Virginia

I am just soooooo bad!!!!
Today, I had a ?"facial peel?" Damn, they don't give those things away and I won't say what I paid, kinda of embarrassing. Anyway, my face feels like they said it would, 1000's of tiny pin pricks , but it is subsiding and not painful, just irritating and I can't scratch it. They said I will have somewhat the same effects as a sunburn and it takes about as long for it to work.
Anyway, following the treatment, which took about 20 minutes, I left the office with one of the instructions burned into my brain, NO SHAVING FOR TWO WEEKS! Well, I was a short way up the road when I remembered that I had forgotten the "make-up" they gave me, a moisturizer and some SPF 15 sunscreen. So I went back to get it. I walked into the lobby and up to the counter and there were 6 - 8 people in the waiting room. The "tech" and the receptionist were huddled over the scheduling book. The tech looked up and was a bit surprised at my standing there as I had already driven her nuts with a bunch of questions during the procedure anyway. I announced in a loud voice, "Sorry, I was so excited about not having to shave for two weeks, I forget my make-up!" "OH!? no problem",she said, "I'll get it!" I turned around and everyone was looking at me, I just smiled. When she brought it out and handed it to me then I let the other shoe drop. "I hope this does NOT mean I can't shave my legs for two weeks?!" Well the receptionist, (who was an order of fries short of a happy meal in the personality department, anyway) her mouth just fell open. The tech, laughed and said, "No, just shave away!" I turned, smiled at the waiting room and walked out! The stunned looks were to die for!!!! Yes, I was "en drab" needless to say and wearing my "Iron Tiger Gym" jacket!
My face is itching again!!! AAAAHHHHHH! I sure hope this does what they say. Eliminates some minor wrinkles, smoothes the skin and evens out the skin tone!
My next assault will be a laser to the age spots which I am assured works wonders, but not for three to four weeks as it takes the "peel" that long to do whatever it is suppose to do!!!
I will keep you posted -------- gotta go scratch now!!!!! Well maybe just some warm water.
Love,
Virginia

Morning update on the face peel. After I got off the forum last night, I wanted to virtually claw at my face. No pain, but itch, ITCH!!!! I washed again with a mild soap - no avail, then I went to bed hoping that maybe if I fell asleep my body would ignore it - Forget that!!!! I got up and found some Benadryl "itch stopping Gel." I put some on and I would venture that within 15 - 20 minutes the itch stopped and I fell asleep.
This morning, no itch, but some redness and very minor swelling, just like they said equilivant to a sunburn, BUT, I can see difference already. Some of the fine lines have all but disappeared, my skin is smoother and tighter also. What will happen when I start to peel I don't know, but this seems to be working so far.
We got about an inch of snow last night! Actually kind of pretty!!!
Stay fluffy, ladies,
Virginia

Glad to hear you're recovering, Virginia. The Nivea Visage toner I use after washing and shaving is primarily purified water and aloe, with no alcohols and no mineral oil. You might try that to help with the itching, as well as any Benadryl products you might use. I hope it feels great when it's all done!
