I "pulled an Elizabeth" yesterday.

Post by CJ »

Hi all,

Yeah, you read me right: I "pulled an Elizabeth" yesterday morning. Heh. No offense, Elizabeth. :P Let me explain myself. For the first time ever in my life, I went out, as a man, in what is obviously women's clothing (high-heeled sandals and all) to go to the drugstore a few blocks away on the main commercial avenue--in broad daylight. I wore black slacks, tan pantyhose, black sandals with a 2" heel, and a breezy and colourful blouse/jacket combo over my all-in-one girdle. I also had on a touch of makeup.

I'll admit it took me a few minutes to still my beating heart enough for me to turn the front door handle and actually step out. It was raining so I took an umbrella with me. Somehow, this made me feel more secure, as though it were a shield of sorts. As I started walking down the block, thinking that maybe I wasn't too obvious, I looked down and noticed that the rain had soaked through my hose, highlighting the red polish on my toenails. Oh well. Couldn't be helped.

A few minutes later, at the drugstore itself, I was going to go to the stationery supplies section to get myself some Krazy Glue for my nails but I decided to go to the cosmetics department once I got there to buy actual nail glue. The two women behind the counter seemed bemused but were very helpful. "Nice shoes," said the older one, with a smile.

On the way home, I noticed tiny groups of teenagers walking along the cross streets, no doubt coming home from school (it was almost noon by then). I silently cursed my bad timing. I hadn't thought about that at all. To my surprise, although many noticed me, not a one said a word or nudged a friend with a wink in my direction. The proverbial "packs of sniggering teenage girls" were there as well but they seemed to be too self-absorbed to notice or to care.

I then made my way to the local convenience store. The owner, a super friendly Chinese woman, took me in at a glance when I walked in. She didn't falter and remained her pleasant and usual self. I came back home refreshed, if a little damp. All in all, a fun outing. When I manage to access the gallery, I'll post a photo.

Love,
CJ

Bravo, Bravo, CJ!
I'd love to see some photos of the "Elizabethan" period of your last couple of days! That's so cool! And it's nice when the teens don't go into obvious spasms, when everything's just another day on the street, la de da. I learned about wearing the wrong shoes in the rain not too long ago--not sure why I hadn't figured that out before. Open toes+rain=squish.

Seriously, CJ, I see something far-reaching in your post, and it speaks of being a whole person. It is good to be able to talk about TGness to the people around us, which you are doing. It just helps so much to demonstrate it from time to time, without lots of effort on your part. Not tons of makeup or elaborate clothes, but just "time to go to the store, OK, let's go!"

Hi girls,

CJ,

Yep, totally made my day. I swear, you don't have to be passable. People will put you in the role you assume, even if you are not passable. It would seem as long as we are willing to play the part, people will give us full credit provided we are just being ourselves and not fruads.

It is so nice to hear someone having the same kind of experinces I have all the time. I know because I have heard second hand that there are people who respect that I am willing to live my life in a manner I feel is right and that I seem to be quite happy doing so.

I love the new phrase Anita coined "Elizabethan outing", for obvious reasons, but I know many of my sisters who are not passable and use that as a reason to not go out, when their hearts desire is different, could benefit.

Well done CJ.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Elizabetan Outing

Post by Hayley »

CJ,

Well done Girl. Glad you had a good time and felt wonderful going out. The timing with the kids had me in tears with laughter, bet the heart rate went sky high around then! Still and all you made it had some nice comments sent in your direction and found a comfort zone you didn't realise you had. Well done again.

As for the coin of phrase 'Elizabethan Outing', a new term for the Girls to use. Elizabeth you pace setter. Glad everyone is having a good time.
